Background: Broad challenges regarding the dental management of people with severe obesity experienced by general dentists have been minimally explored. The perspectives of the dental team regarding these multifaceted issues are currently unknown and they potentially impede the delivery of optimal dental care to this population and contribute to poor oral and general health.

Aims: Our qualitative study aimed to identify and explore barriers and enablers in the dental management of adults with severe obesity among dental professionals and support staff in Australia.

Background: Weight stigma is prevalent within healthcare settings and is an aspect of the lived experience of people living with obesity. There is international evidence of weight stigma in the dental setting, where currently there is also evidence indicating limited training amongst dental professionals regarding obesity or obesity-related stigma. There has been Australian research and none have included dental support staff.

Current scope of practice for optometrists in many countries include topical and oral medication with injectable and lasers being added more recently to scope in the United States (US), Canada, the United Kingdom (UK) and New Zealand (NZ). This expanded scope of optometric practice improves access to eyecare and is critical since an ageing population with a higher prevalence of vision disorders and higher healthcare costs looms. Expanded scope has been shown alongside strong safety records.
