Traditional and antioxidative therapy (retinol and alpha-tocopherol) was done by therapeutic course to 18 patients with phlegmons of maxillofacial region. In the peripheral blood leucocytes and tissues (skin, muscle) of the patients with phlegmons there were determined glutathione reductase activity, glutathione peroxidase activity and content of glutathione. Disbalance of glutathione enzyme redox system in leucocytes of patients with phlegmons was corrected by comprehensive therapy after 1 week.

The examination has involved a total of 216 patients (111 in the study group and 105 in the reference one) with maxillofacial phlegmons. Patients of the main group were administered multiple-modality treatment with surgical treatment of the purulent focus, involving a primary suture on the wound and intraarterial local drug therapy. Partial necrectomy was found possible in the majority of cases with the surgical treatment of the purulent focus; therefore to prevent dissemination of the inflammatory process and liquidate it as soon as possible surgery had to be performed against the background of the maximal permissible antibiotic concentration in the adjacent tissues.

A method was developed for active surgical treatment of phlegmons of the maxillofacial region with the application of intraarterial regional drug therapy. The suggested method was used in operations on 75 patients. The results were compared with those in 65 patients who were treated by the traditional method--opening of the phlegmon.
