Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for acute myeloid leukemia - single center experience.

We aimed to determine the effect of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HSCT) on acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients as a valid alternative therapeutic option for patients without HLA-compatible donor. This retrospective single center study included 79 patients with AML older than 18 years. In this report, we describe the patient characteristics, engraftment, toxicity of treatment, complications, overall survival, and relapse incidence of 79 patients treated chemotherapy and followed by auto-HSCT.

[Thrombotic microangiopathy in pregnancy complicated by acute hemorrhagic-necrotic pancreatitis during early puerperium].

Objective: Authors in the article describe a case of a patient with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpurain 37 weeks gestation complicated by acute severe hemorrhagic-necrotic pancreatitis during the early puerperium.

Design: Case report.

Setting: Ist Department of gynaecology and obstetrics of the Comenius University Bratislava.

Gemcitabine and carboplatin treatment in patients with relapsing ovarian cancer.

Despite progress in primary treatment of patients with advanced ovarian cancer, the majority develop recurrence of the disease. A platinum salt treatment, either as monotherapy or in combination with another cytostatic agent, is indicated for patients who have relapsed 6 or more months after primary treatment and thus have platinum-sensitive relapse. Because repeated use of paclitaxel treatment may lead to substantial neurotoxicity, the combination of gemcitabine with carboplatin represents a suitable treatment option, which is widely used in common clinical practice in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Etiology and resistance patterns of respiratory isolates in Kenyan adults with AIDS from slum population.

We investigated regularly swabs of adults dispenzarised at Mary Immaculate Clinic of Trnava University in Nairobi providing free health care for about 50 000 population of Mukuru Slums. 20 patients who were treated for AIDS by our clinic (those who started HAART before Free National AIDS Cooperation Programme - NASCOP) were assessed after 1, 2 and 3 years (18 of 20 completed the survey, other 2 loss of follow up, probably died. Exposure to other molecules can select resistant mutants.
