Synthetic aperture sonar (sas) systems are designed to observe stationary scatterers located near the sediment interface. Less commonly, a sas system may be used to observe scattering features located above the sonar in the water column. The Undersea Remote Sensing (USRS) project, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, was a collaborative Directed Research Initiative (DRI) focused on studying dynamic estuarine water column features.

Article Synopsis
  • * The interaction between these two water types often leads to breaking waves that release air bubbles, which can alter the overall sound speed in the water by creating a bubbly mixture.
  • * A field study conducted in Mobile Bay in June 2021 found that the presence of bubbles decreased sound speed in the water, with specific measurements showing sound speeds of approximately 750 m/s, very low void fractions, and bubble number densities.

Background: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is frequently associated with psychiatric conditions, particularly anxiety. Deficits in contingency learning during fear conditioning have been hypothesized to increase anxiety and, consequently, pain sensation in susceptible individuals. The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between contingency learning and pain experience in subjects with FMS and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
