Statement Of Objectives: Soft, waterborne polyurethane dispersions are indispensable components in many state-of-the-art materials, with applications ranging from binders for coatings and adhesives to matrixes for flexible devices. While the static bulk nanostructure of such systems is widely studied, the influence that environmental conditions such as relative humidity and airflow have on their film formation and phase segregation behavior in supported films is unknown.
Experiments: Here, we elucidate the nanostructure evolution occurring during drying of an industrially relevant, soft polyurethane, utilizing real-time, non-destructive grazing incidence X-ray scattering analysis.
The influence of alpha-cyclodextrin (αCD) on PEG crystallization is examined for a peptide-PEG conjugate, YYKLVFF-PEG3k comprising an amyloid peptide YYKLVFF linked to PEG with molar mass 3 kg mol. Remarkably, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and simultaneous synchrotron small-angle/wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) show that crystallization of PEG is suppressed by αCD, provided that the cyclodextrin content is sufficient. A hexagonal mesophase is formed instead.

In the nematic phase, their unique behavior is manifested in the formation of nano-sized biaxial clusters of layered molecules (cybotactic groups). While this prompted their consideration in the quest for nematic biaxiality, experimental evidence indicates that the cybotactic order is only short-ranged and that the nematic phase is macroscopically uniaxial.

The self-assembly of three RLs with reasoned variation of their molecular structure (RhaC10, RhaC10C10, and RhaRhaC10C10) and a rhamnose-free C10C10 fatty acid is studied in water as a function of pH. It is found that RhaC10 and RhaRhaC10C10 form micelles in a broad pH range and RhaC10C10 undergoes a micelle-to-vesicle transition from basic to acid pH occurring at pH 6.
