Article Synopsis
  • - This study analyzed how pregnancy complications and birth outcomes affect telomere length in children at age 17, using data from the Raine cohort study in Western Australia, which followed 2900 children over the years.
  • - The research found no overall differences in telomere length based on individual maternal or birth outcomes, but females exposed to adverse conditions during pregnancy exhibited shorter telomeres compared to those born without complications.
  • - Interestingly, while females from pre-eclamptic pregnancies specifically showed significantly shorter telomeres, no such effects were observed in males; this highlights the need for further studies to investigate the factors influencing telomere length in genders separately.

Identifying and analysing isolated populations is critical for conservation. Isolation can make populations vulnerable to local extinction due to increased genetic drift and inbreeding, both of which should leave imprints of decreased genome-wide heterozygosity. While decreases in heterozygosity among populations are frequently investigated, fewer studies have analysed how heterozygosity varies among individuals, including whether heterozygosity varies geographically along lines of discrete population structure or with continuous patterns analogous to isolation by distance.

Elastomers based on block copolymers can self-organize into ordered nanoscale structures, making them attractive for use as flexible conductive nanocomposites. Understanding how ordered structures impact electrical properties is essential for practical applications. This study investigated the morphological evolution of flexible conductive elastomers based on polystyrene--poly(ethylene--butylene)--polystyrene (SEBS) block copolymers with aligned single- or multi-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs or MWCNTs) and their electrical conductivity under large deformations.

Reclamation of mine waste rock piles typically consists of constructing a cover with amendments to improve conditions for vegetation. However, cover amendments have potential to mobilize metals in waste by introducing new chemicals and altering pH and redox conditions. This study evaluates metal phases in a 100-year-old waste rock pile with high metals content (3.
