Increasing human-bear conflicts are a growing concern, and managers often assume bears in developed areas are food-conditioned. We examined the relationship between human-bear conflicts and food conditioning by analyzing isotopic values of hair from black bears () involved in research ( = 34) and conflicts ( = 45). We separated bears into and subgroups based on the impervious surface within their home ranges and separated conflict bears based on observations of human food consumption ( = observations; = no observations).

Development of a fast and user-friendly cryopreservation protocol for sweet potato genetic resources.

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is one of the ten most important staple crops and provides a livelihood for many people around the globe. To adapt to ever-changing circumstances farmers and breeders need to have access to a broad diversity of germplasm. This study focuses on the development of a cryopreservation protocol that allows the long term storage of different sweet potato cultivars.

Ether lipid synthesis and its deficiency in peroxisomal disorders.

This paper deals with the discovery of plasmalogen deficiency in the cerebro-hepato-renal (Zellweger) syndrome and discusses how this has led to the development of postnatal and prenatal diagnostic procedures for this and a number of related peroxisomal disorders in man that show a general impairment in the biosynthesis of ether glycerophospholipids. The results have clearly shown an indispensable role for peroxisomes in the total process of ether lipid synthesis as evidenced by a description of the cellular topography of this process. Platelet-activating factor is a bioactive phospholipid in which the glycero-ether linkage is essential for its biological activities.
