Labor clauses in trade agreements: Hidden protectionism?

Unlabelled: We explore the impact of the introduction and design of labor clauses (LCs) in preferential trade agreements (PTAs) on bilateral trade flows over the period 1990-2014. While it is not a priori clear if the inclusion of LCs in PTAs will decrease or increase bilateral trade, we expect the direction of trade to matter, that is, we expect to observe the (negative or positive) impact of LCs in the South-North trade configuration. We also expect, in that configuration, stronger LCs to yield stronger (negative or positive) effects on bilateral trade flows.

Objectives: Less invasive circulatory support devices have been developed that require anastomosis to a peripheral artery. The Symphony Heart Assist System (Abiomed, Inc, Danvers, Mass) is a volume-displacement pump sewn to the subclavian artery to provide partial circulatory support. The surgical configuration produces nonphysiologic blood pressure and bidirectional flow in the subclavian artery.

Objective: Left ventricular assist device support produces a bleeding diathesis. Evidence suggests a major role for von Willebrand factor (vWF). We examined vWF metabolism in a preclinical model of short-term mechanical circulatory support.

Postcardiotomy shock: clinical evaluation of the BVS 5000 Biventricular Support System.

This prospective trial evaluated the safety and efficacy of a new pulsatile, temporary ventricular assist device, the BVS 5000. Patients were eligible for treatment if they were hemodynamically unstable despite maximal pharmacologic and intraaortic balloon pump therapy, were free of concomitant complications, and were less than 6 hours from the first attempt to separate from cardiopulmonary bypass. Fifty-five postcardiotomy patients were enrolled; 31 met all selection criteria and the remainder failed to meet criteria (n = 15) or were not successfully supported (n = 9).
