Patients suffering from coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19)-related interstitial pneumonia have variable outcomes, and the risk factors for a more severe course have yet to be comprehensively identified. Cohort studies have suggested that coronary artery calcium (CAC), as estimated at chest computed tomography (CT) scan, correlated with patient outcomes. However, given that the prevalence of CAC is gender- and age-dependent, the influence of baseline confounders cannot be completely excluded.

  • Out of 1014 hospitalized patients analyzed, key factors identified that were associated with higher mortality included age, delirium, platelet count, D-dimer levels, signs of right ventricular strain, and previous myocardial necrosis.
  • The EL COVID score demonstrated moderate accuracy (sensitivity of 78.4%, specificity of 65.2%) and can help identify high-risk patients for better treatment and monitoring upon hospital admission.

Unlabelled: Hemoglobin (Hb) levels have emerged as a useful tool for risk stratification and the prediction of outcome after myocardial infarction. We aimed at evaluating the prognostic impact of this parameter among patients in advanced age, where the larger prevalence of anemia and the higher rate of comorbidities could directly impact on the cardiovascular risk.

Methods: All the patients in the ELDERLY-2 trial, were included in this analysis and stratified according to the values of hemoglobin at admission.
