The serum IL-12:IL-6 ratio reliably distinguishes infectious from non-infectious causes of fever during autologous stem cell transplantation.

Background: Fever during neutropenia and after neutrophil engraftment (post-engraftment fever) occurs commonly during autologous transplantation (ASCT), but infections are infrequently identified. Tests that reliably exclude infection may reduce the cost and toxicity of unnecessary diagnostic testing and empiric treatment. We assessed whether serum levels of inflammatory cytokines could distinguish infectious from non-infectious causes of fever in patients undergoing ASCT.

Is telemetry monitoring necessary in low-risk suspected acute chest pain syndromes?

Background: Non-ICU telemetry monitoring has proven to be a valuable resource for patients suspected of having an acute myocardial infarction. While a significant number of patients are admitted to these units, the actual incidence of events or interventions is low.

Objective: To identify a subset of patients in whom telemetry monitoring does not alter management.

Pseudotumor of the bladder as a manifestation of uncomplicated appendicitis.

We report the case of a 67-year-old woman who presented with an apparent bladder tumor and complaints of increased urinary frequency and postvoiding pain. Her diagnostic work-up revealed conflicting findings regarding the source of her bladder disease, and laparoscopy was required to make the final diagnosis of appendicitis. The presentation of appendicitis can be disguised and is often a difficult diagnosis.
