Innovative Integration of Dual Quantum Cascade Lasers on Silicon Photonics Platform.

For the first time, we demonstrate the hybrid integration of dual distributed feedback (DFB) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) on a silicon photonics platform using an innovative 3D self-aligned flip-chip assembly process. The QCL waveguide geometry was predesigned with alignment fiducials, enabling a sub-micron accuracy during assembly. Laser oscillation was observed at the designed wavelength of 7.

Chronic patient remote monitoring through the application of big data and internet of things.

Chronic patients could benefit from the technological advances, but the clinical approaches for this kind of patients are still limited. This paper describes a system for chronic patients monitoring both, in home and external environments. For this purpose, we used novel technologies as big data, cloud computing and internet of things (IoT).

Second harmonic generation hotspot on a centrosymmetric smooth silver surface.

Second harmonic generation (SHG) is forbidden for materials with inversion symmetry, such as bulk metals. Symmetry can be broken by morphological or dielectric discontinuities, yet SHG from a smooth continuous metallic surface is negligible. Using non-linear microscopy, we experimentally demonstrate enhanced SHG within an area of smooth silver film surrounded by nanocavities.

Cathodoluminescence hyperspectral analysis of whispering gallery modes in active semiconductor wedge resonators.

Whispering gallery mode resonators are key devices for integrated photonics. Despite their generalization in fundamental and applied science, information on spatial confinement of light in these structures is mostly retrieved from purely spectral analysis. In this work, we present a detailed spectral and spatial characterization of whispering gallery modes in active semiconductor microdisk resonators by use of hyperspectral cathodoluminescence.

Perceptions of the use of intelligent information access systems in university level active learning activities among teachers of biomedical subjects.

Background: Student participation and the use of active methodologies in classroom learning are being increasingly emphasized. The use of intelligent systems can be of great help when designing and developing these types of activities. Recently, emerging disciplines such as 'educational data mining' and 'learning analytics and knowledge' have provided clear examples of the importance of the use of artificial intelligence techniques in education.
