Background: Almost half of patients with Crohn's disease (CD) require bowel surgeries in their lifetime. Due to the high risk of postoperative disease recurrence and high rate of previous antitumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) failure, often alternative therapy options such as ustekinumab (UST) and vedolizumab (VDZ) are used. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of UST and VDZ among postoperative CD patients as postoperative prophylaxis and rescue therapy.

Background & Aims: Biomarkers that integrate genetic and environmental factors and predict outcome in complex immune diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; including Crohn's disease [CD] and ulcerative colitis [UC]) are needed. We showed that morphologic patterns of ileal Paneth cells (Paneth cell phenotype [PCP]; a surrogate for PC function) is one such cellular biomarker for CD. Given the shared features between CD and UC, we hypothesized that PCP is also associated with molecular/genetic features and outcome in UC.

Evaluating the impact of an educational intervention on the history of racism in America for teaching structural competency to medical academicians.

Background: A challenge facing many Academic Health Centers (AHCs) attempting to revise health professions education to include the impact of racism as a social and structural determinant of health (SSDoH) is a lack of broad faculty expertise to reinforce and avoid undermining learning modules addressing this topic. To encourage an institutional culture that is in line with new anti-racism instruction, we developed a six-part educational series on the history of racism in America and its impact on contemporary health inequities for teaching structural competency to health professions academicians.

Methods: We developed a six-hour elective continuing education (CE) series for faculty and staff with the following objectives: (1) describe and discuss race as a social construct; (2) describe and discuss the decolonization of the health sciences and health care; (3) describe and discuss the history of systemic racism and structural violence from a socio-ecological perspective; and (4) describe and discuss reconciliation and repair in biomedicine.

Background: Since 2009, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) specialists have utilized "IBD LIVE," a weekly live video conference with a global audience, to discuss the multidisciplinary management of their most challenging cases. While most cases presented were confirmed IBD, a substantial number were diseases that mimic IBD. We have categorized all IBD LIVE cases and identified "IBD-mimics" with consequent clinical management implications.
