Alluvial aquifers often exhibit highly conductive embedded formations that can act as preferential pathways for the transport of solutes. In this context, a detailed subsurface characterization becomes crucial for an effective monitoring of groundwater quality and early detection of contaminants. However, small-scale heterogeneities are seldom detected by traditional nondestructive investigations.

Article Synopsis
  • Octreotide LAR is a medicine given through a shot to help treat certain types of cancer called neuroendocrine tumors.
  • A study looked at 243 patients who received this treatment and found that about 44% of them had small lumps called subcutaneous nodules because they missed some shots.
  • The missed shots didn’t seem to make patients live shorter lives, but factors like being female, age, and obesity might affect the chances of getting these lumps.

Background: Ketosis-prone diabetes (KPD) is an intermediate subtype of diabetes mellitus, usually affecting Afro-American adults, presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), without the classic phenotype of autoimmune type 1 diabetes. Patients require insulin therapy at onset for the acute decompensation, then usually remain insulin-free for prolonged periods with diet alone or with other antidiabetic drugs. DKA can be rarely complicated by upper gastrointestinal bleeding and mucosal necrosis, a severe complication named acute esophageal necrosis (AEN) burdened by high mortality.

Sc is one of the most promising theranostic radionuclides, thanks to its low energy γ-ray emission (159 keV), suitable for single photon emission computed tomography imaging and its intense β emission, useful for tumour treatment. Despite promising preclinical results, the translation of Sc-therapeutic agents to the clinic is hampered by its limited availability. Among different Sc-production routes currently being investigated, the V(p,x)Sc reaction has proved to be of particular interest, thanks to the low-cost and easy availability on the market of V material and the diffusion of medium energy proton cyclotrons.
