Shelters in Jordan accommodate a huge number of dogs, which are rescued as stray dogs from different cities of the country, but their health receives almost no attention. The aim of this study was to examine tick infestation as well as tick-borne protozoa and bacteria of 80 randomly sampled dogs in two Jordanian shelters. Ticks identified as lato were found on 14 out of 27 animals in a shelter.

In a recent work we have shown that the osteosarcoma cell line CAL72 may be more closely related to normal osteoblasts than the osteosarcoma cells previously described. In the present work we continued the characterisation of the CAL72 cell line with regard to its effects on various hematopoietic cells, in coculture experiments.

More specifically, phagocytic function and bactericidal action of PMNs after transepithelial migration have not received much attention. The aim of the present study is to compare PMN behavior before and after transepithelial migration, in particular (i) phagocytosis and bactericidal activity; (ii) expression of surface molecules, particularly those involved in phagocytosis; and (iii) apoptosis.

To date, reports of functional PMN chemotaxis in AIDS are contradictory. This is the first attempt to assess this function via an in vitro model allowing transmigration of neutrophils through an intestinal epithelial barrier.
