The subject of substance use disorders in the pediatric population remains a disturbing conundrum for clinicians, researchers and society in general. Many of our youth are at risk of being damaged and even killed by drug addictions that result from the collision of rapidly developing as well as vulnerable central nervous systems encountering the current global drug addiction crisis. A major motif of this chemical calamity is opioid use disorder in adolescents and young adults that was stimulated by the 19th century identification of such highly addictive drugs as morphine, heroin and a non-opiate, cocaine.

Trafficking in the child and adolescent: Application of SAFETY and CARE for a global crisis of exploitation.

Human trafficking in the child and adolescent is a global public health crisis that can be divided into sex trafficking, labor trafficking and organ trafficking. This discussion considers basic terminology in this area, sociodemographic information on these victims, negative effects or repercussions from such egregious actions forced on the victims, issues of screening for healthcare providers based on specific risk factors/indicators, and information regarding screening tools as well as management principles for healthcare professionals. These trafficked persons are seen in varied practice settings such as primary care offices, emergency departments, street medicine operations, and others.

Ovarian tumors in the pediatric population: An update.

Research reveals that 1% of neoplasms in females under 17 years of age are ovarian neoplasms and though usually benign, malignant tumors may occur in the pediatric age group. This review considers various current concepts of these tumors including the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentations, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and treatment options including the need to provide fertility-sparing surgery as well as their potential impacts on the psychological well-being of children and adolescents. We gathered data from the published articles ranging from studies, meta-analyses, retrospective studies, and reviews.

Health equity in pediatrics: Current concepts for the care of children in the 21st century (Dis Mon).

This is an analysis of important aspects of health equity in caring for children and adolescents written by a multidisciplinary team from different medical centers. In this discussion for clinicians, we look at definitions of pediatric health equity and the enormous impact of social determinants of health in this area. Factors involved with pediatric healthcare disparities that are considered include race, ethnicity, gender, age, poverty, socioeconomic status, LGBT status, living in rural communities, housing instability, food insecurity, access to transportation, availability of healthcare professionals, the status of education, and employment as well as immigration.
