Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers used functional MRI to analyze brain responses in 301 participants while measuring their past discrimination experiences from ages 11 to 19 and current psychological symptoms like depression and anxiety.
  • * Findings indicate that brain activity in specific areas (like the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus) related to stress response was influenced by the amount and pattern of discrimination experienced, suggesting that such exposure can alter emotional regulation and increase vulnerability to mental health issues.

Exposure to environmental toxicants have serious implications for the general health and well-being of children, particularly during pivotal neurodevelopmental stages. The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Superfund program has identified several areas (Superfund sites) across the United States with high levels of environmental toxicants, which affect the health of many residents in nearby communities. Exposure to these environmental toxicants has been linked to changes in the structure and function of the brain.

Background And Objectives: The LW gene encodes the LW glycoprotein that carries the antigens of the LW blood group system. LW antigens are distinct from D antigen, however, they are phenotypically related and anti-LW antibodies are often mistaken as anti-D. An antibody was detected in an Australian patient of Aboriginal descent who consistently typed as LW(a+b-).

Neurons can carry information with both the synchrony and rate of their spikes. However, it is unknown whether distinct subtypes of neurons are more sensitive to information carried by synchrony versus rate, or vice versa. Here, we address this question using patterned optical stimulation in slices of somatosensory cortex from mouse lines labelling fast-spiking (FS) and regular-spiking (RS) interneurons.
