Northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) have been integral to the development and progress of biologging technology and movement data analysis, which continue to improve our understanding of this and other species. Adult female elephant seals at Año Nuevo Reserve and other colonies along the west coast of North America were tracked annually from 2004 to 2020, resulting in a total of 653 instrument deployments. This paper outlines the compilation and curation process of these high-resolution diving and location data, now accessible in two Dryad repositories.

Sequential irradiation has been advocated for mitigating the reduction in fatigue properties of tendon compared to a single dose. However, to our knowledge, its capability of mitigating fatigue losses in bone is unknown. Recently, we reported that sequential irradiation did not mitigate losses in high-cycle S-N fatigue life of cortical bone at 15 kGy; however, it is unclear if sequential irradiation provides a benefit to fatigue crack propagation resistance.

Animals in nature potentially experience multiple stressors, and those of anthropogenic origin are likely to be repeated or chronic. However, stress hormone levels are highly context-dependent and are not consistent predictors of chronic stress in wildlife. Profiling the downstream consequences of repeated stress responses, such as changes in metabolism or gene expression, may be more informative for predicting their individual-level health consequences and population-level impacts, which are key objectives for wildlife conservation.

Both high-cycle fatigue life and fatigue crack propagation resistance of human cortical bone allograft are radiation dose-dependent between 0 and 25 kGy such that higher doses exhibit progressively shorter lifetimes. Recently, we have shown that collagen chain fragmentation and stable crosslink accumulation may contribute to the radiation dose-dependent loss in fatigue crack propagation resistance of human cortical bone. To our knowledge, the influence of these mechanisms on high-cycle fatigue life of cortical bone have not been established.
