Background: This objective of the review and analysis is to demonstrate that acyclovir (ACV) 3% ophthalmic ointment is superior to idoxuridine (IDU) in treating herpetic keratitis (HK) presenting as dendritic and geographic ulcer sub-types.

Data Sources: Publications in human subjects were identified by searching the Ovid MEDLINE database through April 2011, combining medical subject headings (MESH) "Keratitis, Herpetic/" AND "Acyclovir/" limiting by the key words "topical" OR "ointment" and also restricted to MESH "Administration, Topical/" OR "Ointments/". The results were cross checked with the references used in the Cochrane Database Syst Rev.

In September 2010, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a final rule governing the requirements for expedited safety reporting for products subject to an investigational new drug application. The rule clarified the types of safety information that qualify for expedited reporting. Its intent was to improve the overall quality of safety reporting by reducing the number of uninterpretable individual reports sent to the FDA and clinical investigators.

Background: Hypomelanosis of Ito and linear and whorled hypermelanosis are pigmentary disorders that follow Blaschko's lines and are associated with cytogenetic mosaicism. However, mosaicism cannot always be shown using conventional karyotyping of blood lymphocytes or skin fibroblasts. This may be because these cell lines originate from mesoderm, whereas Blaschko's lines are an ectodermal phenomenon.
