Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate a non-inflammatory encephalopathy epidemic in northern India, particularly focusing on affected children under 15 years old who experienced fever, vomiting, and unconsciousness in late 1997.
  • Researchers conducted active case finding and house-to-house surveys in seven villages, identifying 129 affected children and examining their clinical features, treatment patterns, and the potential role of medications like aspirin.
  • Findings indicated a high attack rate of 5.4/1000 and a severe case fatality rate of 72%, with many affected children showing abnormal behaviors and serological evidence of measles and varicella zoster virus, although no aspirin intake was reported.
