Occupational medicine specialist referral triggers: Mixed-methods analysis of teleconsult cases.

Background: Qualitative analyses can yield critical lessons for learning organizations in healthcare. Few studies have applied these techniques in the field of occupational and environmental medicine (OEM).

Aims: To describe the characteristics of complex cases referred for OEM subspecialty evaluation and variation by referring provider's training.

Freeze-dried bone and coralline implants compared in the dog.

Partially demineralized, antigen-extracted, freeze-dried cadaver bone and a hydroxyapatite replica of a marine coral skeleton were implanted in 30 surgically created two-wall intrabony pockets in two dogs. Results after 6 and 8 months showed connective tissue encapsulation and some periodontal ligament formation around the cadaver bone. In contrast, the coralline implant was consistently invaded by fibrovascular tissue, showed bone formation on its internal surfaces and had some periodontal ligament formation around it.

Familial lupus erythematosus.

The child of a woman with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) had lesions of DLE develop at the age of 2 months. The original lesions persisted and new lesions continued to develop to date; the child is now 28 months old. In a second child, now 11 months old, a probable lupus erythematosus rash developed at 1 week of age.
