[Relevance of traditional hospitalizations in an ophthalmology department].

Introduction: Ophthalmological indications for traditional hospitalizations are not clearly established and should be updated with respect to both healthcare quality and economic considerations. We therefore analyzed the data of patients hospitalized in an ophthalmology department.

Patients And Method: We prospectively analyzed the medical and socioeconomic charts of all patients hospitalized during a 2-month period (December 2006 and January 2007) in a single ophthalmology department.

[Anticoagulation and vitreoretinal surgery].

About one-third of patients undergoing vitreoretinal surgery are receiving anticoagulation therapy. There are no consensus guidelines on anticoagulation in this setting. Sixty patients (mean age 73 y) on anticoagulation therapy underwent vitreoretinal surgery.

Displacement of retained subfoveal perfluorocarbon liquid after vitreoretinal surgery.

Objective: To report a novel surgical procedure to displace retained subfoveal perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL).

Methods: Retrospective cases series. Three patients had retained subfoveal droplets after PFCL was used in vitrectomy repair of retinal detachment.

CX3CR1-dependent subretinal microglia cell accumulation is associated with cardinal features of age-related macular degeneration.

The role of retinal microglial cells (MCs) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is unclear. Here we demonstrated that all retinal MCs express CX3C chemokine receptor 1 (CX3CR1) and that homozygosity for the CX3CR1 M280 allele, which is associated with impaired cell migration, increases the risk of AMD. In humans with AMD, MCs accumulated in the subretinal space at sites of retinal degeneration and choroidal neovascularization (CNV).
