Background: Local and national financial incentives were introduced in England between 2008 and 2015 to encourage screening and brief alcohol intervention delivery in primary care. We used routine Read Code data and interviews with General Practitioners (GPs) to assess their impact.

Methods: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods study was conducted in 16 general practices representing 106,700 patients and 99 GPs across two areas in Northern England.

The Smoke Free North East Office (SFNEO) is the first dedicated tobacco control office in the UK coordinating a regional tobacco control network, Smoke Free North East (SFNE). On the basis of ethnographic research conducted between 2006 and 2008, this article examines the context for SFNEO's emergence at this time and in this region of England, and the main policy and practice challenges it has faced in its early years. SFNE formed in a favourable political and cultural climate, although regional champions were crucial in setting it up.

The process of developing, implementing, and refining a registry data validation system is integral to optimal trauma registry operations. Describing registrar skill and proficiency in a manner that was once subjective can be replaced with objective assessment through the use of concrete rating guidelines and examples. The ability to standardize the evaluation of each registry abstract becomes the foundation for analyzing the overall accuracy of registry data.

Objectives: This paper reports on the construction of a set of indicators for mental health and the publication of a report for England's Chief Medical Officer. The report was the seventh in a series of reports aimed at initiating public health action to improve health at a regional level in England.
