Unlabelled: Veress needles (VN) are commonly used in establishing pneumoperitoneum in laparoscopic surgery. Previously, a VN with a new safety mechanism 'VeressPLUS' needle (VN+) was developed to reduce the amount of overshoot.

Methods: Eighteen participants (novices, intermediates, and experts) performed in total of 248 insertions in a systematic way on Thiel-embalmed bodies with wide and small bore versions of the conventional VN (VNc) and the VN+.

Cardiac hypertrophy is an independent predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. It predisposes patients to heart failure, QT interval prolongation and ventricular arrhythmias. Angiotensin II (Ang II) exerts direct actions on cardiac tissue inducing cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and electro-mechanical dysfunction.

Glitazones are efficient insulin sensitizers that blunt the effects of angiotensin II (ANG II) in the rat. Sodium chloride is another important modulator of the systemic and renal effects of ANG II. Whether glitazones interfere with the interaction between sodium and the response to ANG II is not known.

The contribution of neuropeptide Y (NPY), deriving from adrenal medulla, to the adrenosympathetic tone is unknown. We found that in response to NPY, primary cultures of mouse adrenal chromaffin cells secreted catecholamine, and that this effect was abolished in cultures from NPY Y(1) receptor knockout mice (Y(1)-/-). Compared with wild-type mice (Y(1)+/+), the adrenal content and constitutive release of catecholamine were increased in chromaffin cells from Y(1)-/- mice.
