Objectives: The burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is increasing. Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a complex intervention offered to patients with CVD, following a heart event, diagnosis or intervention, and it aims to reduce mortality and morbidity. The objective of this within-trial economic evaluation was to compare the cost-effectiveness of metacognitive therapy (MCT) plus usual care (UC) to UC, from a health and social care perspective in the UK.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) services help heart disease patients improve their health and reduce future risks, but mental health issues like depression and anxiety are common among these patients, which traditional treatments often don’t adequately address.
  • The PATHWAY trial showed that adding group Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) to CR significantly benefits anxiety and depression, leading to plans for implementing MCT in NHS through specialized CR sites and evaluating its effects.
  • The study will gather data on adoption rates, patient characteristics, and mental health outcomes, while also identifying challenges and resources needed for successful integration of MCT into standard CR practices.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how a sensory support intervention (SSI) program impacts quality of life in individuals with mild-to-moderate dementia who also have hearing and vision difficulties.
  • Researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial across seven clinics in five European countries, evaluating the effectiveness of an 18-week program compared to standard care.
  • The primary outcome measured was changes in health-related quality of life, using the Dementia Quality of Life Instrument (DEMQoL), with a total of 252 participants randomly assigned to either the SSI group or a control group receiving usual care.

Introduction: Health policy in the UK and globally regarding dementia, emphasises prevention and risk reduction. These goals could be facilitated by automated assessment of dementia risk in primary care using routinely collected patient data. However, existing applicable tools are weak at identifying patients at high risk for dementia.

Fate and transport of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent discharged to rapid infiltration basins (RIBs) is investigated using data from 26 WWTPs in Michigan, USA. PFAS were found to accumulate in groundwater downgradient from RIBs with median groundwater-effluent enrichment factors for ten commonly detected, terminal-form perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) ranging from 1.3 to 5.
