Skin epithelial stem cells correct aberrancies induced by oncogenic mutations. Oncogenes invoke different strategies of epithelial tolerance; while wild-type cells outcompete β-catenin-gain-of-function (βcatGOF) cells, Hras cells outcompete wild-type cells. Here we ask how metabolic states change as wild-type stem cells interface with mutant cells and drive different cell-competition outcomes.

Purpose: To evaluate the potency and security of Pneumatic Vitreolysis (PVL) as the primary treatment for Full-Thickness Macular Holes (FTMHs) and provide insights into patient selection criteria and procedural outcomes.

Patients And Methods: A retrospective analysis of three clinical cases presenting with FTMHs treated initially with PVL was conducted. Cases were evaluated for anatomical and functional outcomes through comprehensive ophthalmic examination and optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of menstrual cycle phases and time of day on various stress and immune biomarkers, including salivary α-amylase (sAA) and secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA), in a group of 17 participants.
  • No significant interactions were found between menstrual cycle phases and time of day for the biomarkers, resting blood pressure, heart rate, or body composition.
  • However, results indicate that resting heart rate and sAA levels were higher in the afternoon, while SIgA levels were higher in the morning, highlighting the influence of time of day on these markers, rather than the menstrual cycle phases.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) arises from liver cells (hepatocytes) that are damaged and undergoing compensatory growth, particularly due to metabolic disorders like MASH.
  • The tumor-suppressive effects of p53 and the anti-cancer role of the enzyme FBP1 are undermined in HCC, as FBP1 is commonly degraded and suppressed in tumors.
  • Key metabolic pathways involving AKT and NRF2 play a role in reversing the effects of cellular senescence, boosting the growth of HCC cells and leading to the accumulation of genetic mutations that contribute to cancer progression.

Understanding effects of extreme heat across diverse settings is critical as social determinants play an important role in modifying heat-related risks. We apply a multi-scale analysis to understand spatial variation in the effects of heat across Mexico and explore factors that are explaining heterogeneity. Daily all-cause mortality was collected from the Mexican Secretary of Health and municipality-specific extreme heat events were estimated using population-weighted temperatures from 1998 to 2019 using Daymet and WorldPop datasets.
