Background: The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Curriculum Outcomes and Entrustable Professional Activities (COEPA) recognize the need for social determinants of health (SDH) education for pharmacy learners. However, there is a dearth of published strategies for incorporating comprehensive SDH education in Doctor of Pharmacy curricula. The objectives of this study were to: 1) highlight unpublished exemplars of SDH teaching models and 2) propose strategies for teaching SDH.

A congenital lumbar hernia is a rare type of hernia that can affect children born with lumbo-costo-vertebral syndrome. This case report is the first to describe a hybrid laparoscopic-assisted approach, which enabled precise intra-operative localization of a pediatric congenital lumbar hernia, and definitive surgical repair was then undertaken through an open approach. Unlike prior studies that have focused solely on either open or laparoscopic techniques, this hybrid approach offers a new strategy to improve surgical accuracy, particularly where imaging and clinical examination are inconclusive.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the role of increased intracellular calcium (Ca) during fertilization in sea stars, which is crucial for restarting zygote metabolism and preventing polyspermy.
  • Researchers used two bioinformatics strategies to identify transcripts coding for proteins with SH2 domains in the mature egg transcriptome, finding a total of 82 transcripts.
  • The novel method discovered 33 of these transcripts that were not identified by the traditional approach, offering new targets for future experiments on egg activation.

One challenge in studies using tissue collected from multiple cohorts is avoiding batch effects when preparing for large-scale multi-omic experiments, such as combined single-cell RNA sequencing and metabolomics. The method in the current study utilizes flash-frozen pancreatic islets from fetal non-human primates collected over a span of two years for input into single-nucleus RNA sequencing and ATAC sequencing assays. The cytosolic fraction generated during nuclear extraction was retained for downstream capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry and subsequent metabolite quantification.

Background: Pharmacists are often the most accessible health care provider, particularly in medically underserved areas, and experience addressing health disparities is important. While the importance of integrating health disparities throughout the pharmacy curriculum is clear from Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education (ACPE) standards, there is a paucity of data within experiential settings. This study describes how focused, health disparities learning activities were incorporated into a 40-h clinical introductory pharmacy practice experience (IPPE) and describes learner outcomes from these learning activities.
