Induction of parthenogenesis (embryo formation from unfertilized egg cells) by embryogenic transcription factors is associated with twin formation at high frequencies, and involves two distinct mechanisms. Synthetic apomixis has been achieved through the induction of parthenogenesis by ectopic expression of the Baby Boom family of transcription factors. An associated phenomenon from this process is the formation of polyembryony including twin progeny at high frequencies, but the underlying mechanisms have not been explored.

Mutations reducing the function of MYT1L, a neuron-specific transcription factor, are associated with a syndromic neurodevelopmental disorder. MYT1L is used as a pro-neural factor in fibroblast-to-neuron transdifferentiation and is hypothesized to influence neuronal specification and maturation, but it is not clear which neuron types are most impacted by MYT1L loss. In this study, we profile 412,132 nuclei from the forebrains of wild-type and MYT1L-deficient mice at three developmental stages: E14 at the peak of neurogenesis, P1 when cortical neurons have been born, and P21 when neurons are maturing, to examine the role of MYT1L levels on neuronal development.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral corticosteroids (OCS) are commonly used to manage exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but can lead to negative health outcomes that increase healthcare costs and resource use.
  • A study analyzed data from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink to compare healthcare attendance and costs between COPD patients who used OCS and those who didn’t, focusing on hospital visits and costs.
  • Results showed that patients who used OCS had significantly higher healthcare attendance and costs, with the increases correlating positively with the cumulative OCS dose, particularly for primary care consultations and emergency visits.

White-tailed deer () are a cervid species found mostly in the Americas. Managing white-tailed deer requires understanding their relationship with the environment, which was characterized by Roseberry and Woolf (Wildlife Society Bulletin , 1998, 252) for all counties in Illinois, USA, who incorporated habitat quantity and quality in a deer habitat suitability index. However, this index was based on satellite imagery from 1996 and did not explore the smaller spatial scales used by deer.

Article Synopsis
  • High HIV retention rates in South Africa's public primary care facilities are challenged by various barriers, but some facilities manage to excel despite these issues by leveraging a Positive Deviance approach to identify their strengths.
  • An extensive study, including interviews and focus groups, revealed key traits of successful facilities such as compassionate care, high staff morale, efficient workflows, and welcoming environments.
  • Based on these findings, a new intervention called the Connect intervention was developed, focusing on staff support, improving workflow, and enhancing the physical setting of care to boost patient retention in lower-performing facilities.
