Carbon dioxide fluxes from Tifway bermudagrass: early results.

This paper reports for the first time preliminary data on carbon uptake of warm-season turfgrass at a well-managed sod farm in south central Georgia. It examines the changes in carbon uptake from one of the most widely used warm-season turfgrass cultivars in the world, Tifway Bermudagrass. It elucidates the role of canopy density and light avalaibility on the net carbon uptake using the eddy-covariance technique.

Characterization of chest masses by FDG positron emission tomography.

Radiographic imaging techniques have proved to be of limited value in characterizing chest masses. Likewise, scintigraphic techniques with tumor-seeking single photon emitting agents have shown marginal practical benefit. In contrast, high resolution PET with [F-18]-2-fluoro-2-D-deoxyglucose (FDG) offers a unique opportunity to distinguish benign from malignant processes by determining metabolic characteristics.

Developmentally regulated expression of a Giardia lamblia cyst wall protein gene.

The protozoan Giardia lamblia is an obligate parasite of the mammalian small intestine. We studied the expression of a gene that encodes a protein component of the cyst wall, a complex structure assembled during the differentiation of trophozoites to cysts and which is critical to survival of the parasite outside its mammalian host. Transcripts from the cyst wall protein gene increase more than 100-fold during encystation, reaching a maximum between 5 and 24 hours after induction.

An analysis of the NCYFS II Modified Pull-up Test.

The findings of this study are summarized as follows: 1. To obtain a reliable pull-up score for male subjects, it is necessary to administer the test on two days and use the mean of the two scores. For female subjects, a reliable score may be obtained by administering the test once.

A new batch calorimeter for aerobic growth studies.

A microcalorimeter for aerobic growth studies, derived from a Tian Calvet differential apparatus, was successfully constructed. The calorimetric vessel was a short cylinder, which permitted a good exchange between the surface area and the gas phase. The time constant of the calorimeter was 3.
