Point-of-care ultrasound has been shown to have a demonstrable impact in the austere/out-of-hospital environment. As ultrasounds become more affordable and portable, a myriad of uses in austere environments are becoming recognized. We present a case of a stranded hiker with an ultrasound-confirmed glenohumeral joint dislocation who underwent ultrasound-guided intra-articular lidocaine injection and ultrasound-confirmed reduction.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) develop in approximately 10% of neurofibromatosis type-1 patients and are a major contributing factor to neurofibromatosis-1 patient mortality and morbidity. MPNSTs are multidrug resistant, and thus long-term patient survival rates are poor after standard doxorubicin or multiagent chemotherapies. We show that the hyaluronan receptor CD44 forms complexes with multidrug transporters, BCRP (ABCG2) and P-glycoprotein (ABCB1), in the plasma membrane of human MPNST cells.

Recently, prostaglandins have been shown to be effective agents for the treatment of cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis. Among the prostaglandins studied is carboprost tromethamine, a PGF2a analog. To determine the effectiveness of carboprost tromethamine therapy on the urothelium, we induced hemorrhagic cystitis in 81 rats.

To facilitate an understanding of how androgens participate in the genesis of human benign hyperplasia and carcinoma we assayed androgen receptor in the epithelium and stroma of human prostatic tissue from 57 patients. Immunohistochemical staining of human androgen receptor was performed on 106 sections of normal prostate, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. To determine variability of androgen receptor staining sections taken from different portions of the gland were studied.
