Article Synopsis
  • The SARS-CoV-2 virus mutates continuously, leading to new variants like Omicron, which has reduced the effectiveness of vaccines worldwide.
  • The study evaluated the Sputnik V vaccine's effectiveness against several SARS-CoV-2 variants using various research methods on transgenic mice.
  • Results showed that while Sputnik V generates a strong immune response, its efficacy is significantly lower against the Omicron variant, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring and potential development of new vaccines.

Xanthine derivatives have been a great area of interest for the development of potent bioactive agents. Thirty-eight methylxanthine derivatives as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChE) were designed and synthesized. Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of 8-chlorocaffeine with aryl(hetaryl)boronic acids, the CuAAC reaction of 8-ethynylcaffeine with several azides, and the copper(I) catalyzed one-pot three-component reaction (A-coupling) of 8-ethynylcaffeine, 1-(prop-2-ynyl)-, or 7-(prop-2-ynyl)-dimethylxanthines with formaldehyde and secondary amines were the main approaches for the synthesis of substituted methylxanthine derivatives (yield 53-96%).

This study examines the adhesive properties and cytotoxicity of polyelectrolyte nanofilms from polyethyleneimine (PEI), polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) and sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) on human bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (h-MSCs) and mouse adipose tissue (m-MSC) . Films are formed on 24- and 96-well culture plates in the combinations: PEI, PAH, PEI-PSS, PEI-PSS-PAH, PEI-PSS-PEI. An analysis of the culture results show that direct contact of h-MSCs with the PEI surface promotes adhesion (93-95% of adhesive cells versus 40% in the control).

This paper examines the effect of electromagnetic waves, with maxima in the green or red regions of the spectrum, on the morphofunctional state of multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells. The illumination regimes used in our experiments did not lead to any substantial heating of the samples; the physical parameters of the lighting were carefully monitored. When the samples were illuminated with a green light, no significant photostimulatory effect was observed.

It is known that visible light, including sunlight and laboratory lighting, adversely affect the development of embryos in vitro. In with article we present a technology for the synthesis of composite screens, capable to photoconvert UV and a part of the blue spectrum into red light with the maximum ~630 nm. It is established that the application of such transformed light with an evident red component raises the chances of embryos to survive and protects embryonic stem cells.
