Background: Arising in the late 1990s, when a promising role in prenatal diagnostics was first delineated for circulating fetal DNA, non-invasive prenatal tests (NIPTs) have been increasingly used with more frequency and popularity. These exams have been used as a prenatal screening tests for genetic diseases. Initially, they were developed for the investigation of the main fetal chromosomal aneuploidies, but lately they have also been used to rule out genomic microrearrangements and monogenic conditions.

Cavity-free lasing in atmospheric air has stimulated intense research toward a fundamental understanding of underlying physical mechanisms. In this Letter, we identify a new mechanism-a third-harmonic photon mediated resonant energy transfer pathway leading to population inversion in argon via an initial three-photon excitation of nitrogen molecules irradiated by intense 261 nm pulses-that enables bidirectional two-color cascaded lasing in atmospheric air. By making pump-probe measurements, we conclusively show that such cascaded lasing results from superfluorescence rather than amplified spontaneous emission.

Mutations in human isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) drive tumor formation in a variety of cancers by replacing its conventional activity with a neomorphic activity that generates an oncometabolite. Little is understood of the mechanistic differences among tumor-driving IDH1 mutants. We previously reported that the R132Q mutant uniquely preserves conventional activity while catalyzing robust oncometabolite production, allowing an opportunity to compare these reaction mechanisms within a single active site.

In the long-wave infrared (LWIR) range, where, due to wavelength scaling, the critical power of Kerr self-focusing P in air increases to 300-400 GW, we demonstrate that without external focusing a train of picosecond CO laser pulses can propagate in the form of a single several-centimeter diameter channel over hundreds of meters. The train of 10 µm pulses, for which the total energy ≥20 J is distributed over several near-terawatt picosecond pulses with a maximum power ≤2P, is generated naturally during short pulse amplification in a CO laser. It is observed that the high-power 10 µm beam forms a large diameter "hot gas" channel in the ambient air with a ≥ 50 ms lifetime.
