Topical fluocinolone acetonide acetate ointment in autosomal dominant congenital hypotrichosis.

Hypotrichosis present at birth occurring as an isolated defect in three members of an Afghan family and transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait, responded to topical applications of fluocinolone acetonide acetate ointment. The patients were a 9-year-old boy, his 7-year-old sister and their 30-year-old mother who since birth, had sparse, light-coloured and thin hairs on their scalp which would not grow longer than 1 cm in length. Microscopic examination revealed the hairs to be thin and fragile, but of a uniform thickness.

Chronic urticaria treated with soft nasal filters.

A 22-year-old boy having two attacks of urticaria per day for the last 5 years and intermittent attacks of sneezing and rhinorrhoea, and without any clues to the causative agent in spite of a detailed history and follow up, showed almost complete relief on wearing an ordinary cloth mask for 3 days. He was subsequently trained to use the soft nasal filters and obtained almost 80% relief in urticaria and complete relief in rhinitis during the next 1 year. Wearing the mask for 2 days again led to complete relief and further training in the proper use of the filters was helpful.

Air-borne contact dermatitis caused exclusively by xanthium strumarium.

Most cases having air-borne contact dermatitis (ABCD) in India are considered to be caused by Parthenium hysterophorus. In some cases however, other plants have also been noticed to give positive patch test reactions. We are reporting two cases presenting as ABCD who showed positive patch tests with Xanthium strumarium while the patch tests with Parthenium hysterophorus were negative.

The estimation of local brain temperature by in vivo 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Brain temperature may be important for investigating pathology and cerebroprotective effects of pharmaceuticals and hypothermia. Two methods for estimating temperature using 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy are described: a partially water-suppressed binomial sequence and non-water-suppressed point-resolved spectroscopy. Relative to N-acetylaspartate (Naa), water chemical shift (delta H2O-Naa) in piglet brain depended linearly on temperature from 30 degrees to 40 degrees C: temperature was 286.

Orbital-tuberculosis.

Three cases of orbital tuberculosis are presented, two as cold abscess in the orbit and one as a chronic indolent sinus. A simple clinical test like Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) can demonstrate some or all of the characteristic pathological features like caseating necrosis, epitheloid cells and Langhan's giant cells. Important corroborative evidence can be obtained from the Tuberculin test and a positive therapeutic trial.

Enhanced tumor imaging with pokeweed mitogen.

Traditional tumor imaging with biotracer techniques relies solely on the target specificity of the biomolecule. We hypothesize that specific imaging is possible by altering the rate of tissue clearance (both normal and aberrant) of any given radiotracer. Pokeweed mitogen (PWM) as a biomodulator, represents a class of molecules which regulate cellular differentiation and cell-cell interactions and, as part of these mechanisms alter tissue clearance rates (both normal and aberrant).

Efficacy of praziquantel against Schistosoma nasale infection in cattle.

Cattle naturally infected with nasal schistosomiasis were treated with a single oral dose of praziquantel at 20 mg/kg body weight. The drug was highly effective causing a considerable reduction in egg counts, cessation of clinical signs and progressive regression of the nasal granulomatous growths.

Monoclonal antibodies against a glycoprotein localized in coated pits and endocytic vesicles inhibit alpha 2-macroglobulin binding and uptake.

Eight monoclonal antibodies, all IgG2a, which recognize a 180/90-kDa glycoprotein similar in properties to the receptor for alpha 2-macroglobulin of mouse embryo 3T3 cell plasma membranes, have been tested for their effect on the binding and uptake of alpha 2-macroglobulin by live cells. One antibody directly inhibited binding of 125I-alpha 2-macroglobulin under conditions in which 125I-transferrin binding to the transferrin receptor was unaffected. Another monoclonal antibody decreased alpha 2-macroglobulin binding when preincubated with cells at 37 degrees C.

Immunoassay of tear lysozyme in acute adenovirus conjunctivitis.

The tear lysozyme levels were measured by immunoassay in 92 healthy subjects and 98 patients with acute adenovirus conjunctivitis. They were found to be significantly decreased during the acute phase of the disease. The extent of this decline in the tear lysozyme level was correlated with increased severity of disease.

A new treatment of pthiriasis palpebrarum.

Treatment of phthiriasis palebrarum so far is unsatisfactory and prolonged. It was an accidental finding that led us to try various strengths of fluorescein on head lice. It was seen from our study that 20% fluorescein resulted in the lice' instantaneous death.
