Objectives: An important area of research in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) aims to identify sensitive and reliable biomarkers of disease activity. The key iron-regulatory hormone hepcidin-25 (HEP) has been advocated as a potential biomarker to assess anaemia of chronic disease and iron deficiency in adults with rheumatoid arthritis.
Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study evaluating the utility of serum HEP in 79 non-systemic onset JIA patients (14 males, 65 females), with/without anaemia, determining its correlations with disease activity, assessed by the JIA Disease Activity Score (JADAS)-27, anaemia parameters, and iron status indices.
Central nervous system (CNS) metastatic spread in neuroblastoma (NB) is rare and occurs more often at relapse/progression. We report on CNS involvement in high risk (HR) NB over 25 years. In studies on a non-immune cell model, the rat FRTL-5 cell line, we observed that transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1, like γ-interferon (IFN), increased 90K levels, despite its immunosuppressive functions and the ability to decrease MHC class I. To explain this paradoxical result, we investigated the mechanisms involved in the TGF-β1 regulation of 90K expression with the aim to demonstrate that TGF-β1 utilizes different molecular pathways to regulate the two genes.

Methods: 90K glycoprotein, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, TNF, antinuclear antibodies, rheumatoid factor and the Juvenile Arthritis Disease Activity Score were assessed in 71 children: 23 with newly diagnosed JIA, 23 with established and active JIA and 25 healthy controls. Patients, eligible for anti-TNF treatment, underwent a similar clinical/laboratory assessment after 6- and 12-month etanercept therapy.

Two pasta samples, produced with BF-enriched semolina (BF pasta) or only with micronized DK (DK pasta), respectively, were compared with pasta made with traditional semolina (control pasta). Methods: The role of LGALS3BP on CRC progression and clinical prognosis was analyzed by combining cell cultures, in vitro assays, and immunohistochemistry.
Wheat kernels contain fructans, fructose based oligosaccharides with prebiotic properties, in levels between 2 and 35 weight % depending on the developmental stage of the kernel. To improve knowledge on the metabolic pathways leading to fructan storage and degradation, carbohydrate fluxes occurring during durum wheat kernel development were analyzed. Kernels were collected at various developmental stages and quali-quantitative analysis of carbohydrates (mono- and di-saccharides, fructans, starch) was performed, alongside analysis of the activities and gene expression of the enzymes involved in their biosynthesis and hydrolysis.

Colour and cooking quality, nutritional value and glycaemic index (GI) of pasta were assessed in comparison with commercially enriched inulin and 100% wholewheat pastas. IWG integration induced deep changes in colour, without negatively affecting the cooking quality of pasta, and promoted nutritional quality by increasing the fibre content; IWG pasta presented a remarkable leaching of FOS in cooking water, thus providing only 1 g of FOS per serving.

The cultivar Matt produced the best pasta quality under conventional cropping system, while the quality parameters evaluated were unsatisfactory under organic farming. The cultivar Saragolla showed the best yield amount and pasta quality in all the experimental conditions, thus proving to be the cultivar more adapt to organic farming.

Therefore, galectin inhibitors might represent novel therapeutic agents for cancer.
Materials And Methods: A series of structural analogs of the disaccharide methyl beta-lactosaminide were screened as potential galectin inhibitors by examining their capability to block binding of galectin-1 and/or galectin-3 to LGalS3BP in solid-phase assays.
The time course of compositional changes in the polysaccharide and protein fractions, and of changes in protein structural properties, was investigated in grains of two Italian durum wheat cultivars, Ofanto and Duilio, and the pattern of changes was found to be specific to each cultivar. The fructo-oligosaccharide content in ripening kernels was different between cultivars, as was the pattern of starch accumulation. Evaluation of gluten proteins by Western-blotting using broad-specificity anti-gliadin antibodies showed the sudden appearance of immunoreactive proteins during ripening.
