Background: During the first pandemic phase of COVID-19, an epidemiological study, named First survey, was conducted on the population of a small rural area in northern Italy. In spring 2020, the results showed how a prolonged lockdown slowed down the spread of the virus.

Methods: After contacting positive First Survey subjects and their families, those who decided to join voluntarily underwent a blood test to assess the presence of qualitative lgG about 2 months after the previous one.

The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome type 2 coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and its complications have demonstrated the devastating impact of a new infectious pathogen. The organisational change promulgated by the isolation of affected communities is of extreme importance to achieve effective containment of the contagion and good patient care. The epidemiological study of the population of a small rural community in the North East of Italy revealed how much the virus had circulated during Spring, 2020, and how contagion has evolved after a prolonged lockdown.

We present a comprehensive experimental and numerical study of magnetization dynamics in a thin metallic film triggered by single-cycle terahertz pulses of ∼20  MV/m electric field amplitude and ∼1  ps duration. The experimental dynamics is probed using the femtosecond magneto-optical Kerr effect, and it is reproduced numerically using macrospin simulations. The magnetization dynamics can be decomposed in three distinct processes: a coherent precession of the magnetization around the terahertz magnetic field, an ultrafast demagnetization that suddenly changes the anisotropy of the film, and a uniform precession around the equilibrium effective field that is relaxed on the nanosecond time scale, consistent with a Gilbert damping process.

Energy-efficient switching of magnetization is a central problem in nonvolatile magnetic storage and magnetic neuromorphic computing. In the past two decades, several efficient methods of magnetic switching were demonstrated including spin torque, magneto-electric, and microwave-assisted switching mechanisms. Here we experimentally show that low-dimensional magnetic chaos induced by alternating spin torque can strongly increase the rate of thermally-activated magnetic switching in a nanoscale ferromagnet.

Current-induced vortex oscillations in an extended thin-film with point-contact geometry are considered. The synchronization of these oscillations with a microwave external magnetic field is investigated by a reduced order model that takes into account the dynamical effects associated with the significant deformation of the vortex structure produced by the current, which cannot be taken care of by using the standard rigid vortex theory. The complete phase diagram of the vortex oscillation dynamics is derived and it is shown that strong hysteretic behavior occurs in the synchronization with the external field.

Two approaches based on intact cell matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (IC-MALDI-ToF MS) have been evaluated in order to discriminate and identify nine former Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) species, Burkholderia contaminans belonging to the novel Taxon K, Burkholderia gladioli, and the most relevant non-fermentative (NF) Gram-negative rods recovered from cystic fibrosis (CF) sputum cultures. In total, 146 clinical isolates and 26 reference strains were analysed. IC mass spectra were obtained with high reproducibility applying a recently developed inactivation protocol which is based on the extraction of microbial proteins by trifluoroacetic acid (TFA).

The antimicrobial compound dodecyl-di(aminoethyl)-glycine was immobilized in a silicon oxide xerogel matrix and used for glass surface coating. Coated glasses were tested for surface antimicrobial activity. The utilization of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as a silicon oxide polymer precursor, using the dip-coating process, allowed for the generation of transparent thin films over glass surfaces.

We investigated the ability of fatty acids to induce growth inhibition and apoptosis in the human PaCa-44 pancreatic cancer cell line and the mechanism(s) underlying apoptosis. Butyric acid, alpha-linoleic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were supplemented at 200 microM concentration in the medium of cell cultures. Our results showed that all fatty acids inhibited cell growth, whereas only DHA induced cell apoptosis.

A novel theoretical approach to magnetization dynamics driven by spin-polarized currents is presented. Complete stability diagrams are obtained for the case where spin torques and external magnetic fields are simultaneously present. Quantitative predictions are made for the critical currents and fields inducing magnetization switching, for the amplitude and frequency of magnetization self-oscillations, and for the conditions leading to hysteretic transitions between self-oscillations and stationary states.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids have been indicated to induce anti-proliferative and/or apoptotic effects in various tumor cells. We showed that, at a 200- micro M concentration, both alpha-linoleic (18:2 n-6; LA) or docosahexaenoic (22:6 n-3; DHA) acid inhibited cell growth, while only DHA induced apoptosis in the human Paca-44 pancreatic cancer cell line. Investigating the mechanism underlying DHA-induced apoptosis, we showed that DHA induced a rapid and dramatic (>60%) intracellular depletion of reduced glutathione (GSH), without affecting oxidized glutathione (GSSG).

This paper presents a simple method for determining both the presence and concentration of Listeria monocytogenes in dairy products. The method involves application of the Most Probable Number (MPN) technique and enrichment of a 25 g sample. Our tests showed that the MPN correlates with the Colony Forming Units (CFU), and estimated concentrations of as low as 1 bacterium/gr or less.

The antioxidant activity of the major phenols derived from hydroxycinnamic acid (caffeic, ferulic, and p-coumaric acids) on in vitro LDL oxidation was screened, using Cu2+ as catalyst. The presence of the second phenolic hydroxy group enhanced the inhibitory effect of these compounds. In fact, at 5 microM concentration, only caffeic acid completely protected LDL from modification as measured as conjugated dienes formation and apo B-100 fragmentation, also preserving alpha-tocopherol.

The natural biocidal activity of lemon juice was studied in order to explore its possible use as a disinfectant and inhibitor of Vibrio cholerae in drinking water for areas lacking water treatment plants. From January through July 1993, water samples of varying alkalinity and hardness were prepared artificially, and underground and surface water samples were obtained from a number of different rural and urban areas in Argentina's Buenos Aires Province. After measuring the latter samples' hardness and alkalinity, a range of concentrations of lemon juice and other acidifiers were added to each sample, and the resulting pH as well as the samples' ability to destroy V.
