The objective of this study was to determine quarters requiring antimicrobial treatment using either a benchtop somatic cell counter or culture with gram-positive selective media and compare the outcomes in these cows to those receiving blanket dry cow therapy (BDCT) in a randomized, controlled trial. We evaluated 2 novel methods of identifying cows with intramammary infections followed by selective antimicrobial treatment at a commercial dairy farm to determine their usefulness in decreasing antibiotic usage during the dry period without significant detrimental effects on milk quality and production. Cows (n = 840) were randomly allocated to one of 3 groups (BDCT, gram-positive selective media culture-based selective dry cow therapy [C-SDCT], and somatic cell count-based SDCT [S-SDCT]) the day before dry-off, and quarter-level milk samples (QLMS) were collected.

Objective: To determine the best management option (surgical excision versus imaging surveillance) following the diagnosis of pure radial scars (RSs) and RSs with associated additional high-risk lesions (HRLs) encountered on percutaneous core-needle breast biopsy.

Methods: An IRB-approved retrospective review of the breast imaging reporting system database was performed to identify all cases of pure RS alone or RS plus an additional HRL (papilloma, atypia, lobular neoplasia) diagnosed on core-needle biopsy, from 2007 to 2016, at four breast centers in our institution. Cases with associated malignancy, discordant radiologic-pathologic results, or those lost to follow-up were excluded.

Objective: Breast pain is a common reason for imaging evaluation; however, the limited literature available suggests a low incidence of malignancy with isolated pain. The goal of this study is to calculate the risk of cancer in patients with breast pain, and to compare to the screening mammography cancer detection rates.

(SGX), four New York area institutions, and two University of California schools have formed the New York Structural GenomiX Research Consortium (NYSGXRC), an industrial/academic Research Consortium that exploits individual core competencies to support all aspects of the NIH-NIGMS funded Protein Structure Initiative (PSI), including protein family classification and target selection, generation of protein for biophysical analyses, sample preparation for structural studies, structure determination and analyses, and dissemination of results. At the end of the PSI Pilot Study Phase (PSI-1), the NYSGXRC will be capable of producing 100-200 experimentally determined protein structures annually.

The kinetics of the lamellar (L alpha)-inverse hexagonal (HII) phase transition in diacylphosphatidylethanolamine (PE)--water systems were probed with time-resolved X-ray diffraction. Transition kinetics in the fast time regime (approximately 100 ms) were studied by initiating large temperature jumps (up to 30 degrees C) with a 50-ms electrical current pulse passed through a lipid-salt water dispersion, resulting in ohmic heating of the sample. Diffraction with a time resolution to 10 ms was acquired at the National Synchrotron Light Source.

The new technique of x-ray microtomography nondestructively generates three-dimensional maps of the x-ray attenuation coefficient inside small samples with approximately 1 percent accuracy and with resolution approaching 1 micrometer. Spatially resolved elemental maps can be produced with synchrotron x-ray sources by scanning samples at energies just above and below characteristic atomic absorption edges. The system consists of a high-resolution imaging x-ray detector and high-speed algorithms for tomographic image reconstruction.
