The simulation of EXAFS spectra of thin films via ab initio methods is discussed. The procedure for producing the spectra is presented as well as an application to a two-dimensional material (WSe) where the effectiveness of this method in reproducing the spectrum and the linear dichroic response is shown. A series of further examples in which the method has been employed for the structural determination of materials are given.

The chemical functionalization of 2D exfoliated black phosphorus (2D BP) continues to attract great interest, although a satisfactory structural characterization of the functionalized material has seldom been achieved. Herein, we provide the first complete structural characterization of 2D BP functionalized with rare discrete Pd units, obtained through a mild decomposition of the organometallic dimeric precursor [Pd(η-CH)Cl]. A multitechnique approach, including HAADF-STEM, solid-state NMR, XPS, and XAS, was used to study in detail the morphology of the palladated nanosheets (Pd/BP) and to unravel the coordination of Pd units to phosphorus atoms of 2D BP.

The study of interfacing effects arising when different magnetic phases are in close contact has led to the discovery of novel physical properties and the development of innovative technological applications of nanostructured magnetic materials. Chemical and microstructural inhomogeneities at the interfacial region, driven by interdiffusion processes, chemical reactions and interface roughness may significantly affect the final properties of a material and, if suitably controlled, may represent an additional tool to finely tune the overall physical properties. The activity at the Nanostructured Magnetic Materials Laboratory (nM-Lab) at CNR-ISM of Italy is aimed at designing and investigating nanoscale-engineered magnetic materials, where the overall magnetic properties are dominated by the interface exchange coupling.

Mixed ionic electronic conducting ceramics Nd WO (δ is the oxygen deficiency) provide excellent stability in harsh environments containing strongly reactive gases such as CO, CO, H, HO or HS. Due to this chemical stability, they are promising and cost-efficient candidate materials for gas separation, catalytic membrane reactors and protonic ceramic fuel cell technologies. Fifty years after its discovery, the ovonic threshold switching (OTS) phenomenon, a unique nonlinear conductivity behavior observed in some chalcogenide glasses, has been recently the source of a real technological breakthrough in the field of data storage memories.
