Article Synopsis
  • A citizen science survey in Poland involved 2169 beekeepers reporting losses of 9466 honey bee colonies from 2017 to 2022, accounting for 12.2% of winter losses.
  • Small-scale apiaries experienced the highest loss rates at 14.8%, compared to 11.6% for large-scale and 11.4% for medium-scale apiaries, with the main issues being dead colonies linked to depopulation syndrome or starvation.
  • Five management factors were identified, with practices like queen replacement being more frequent in large-scale apiaries, but the overall impact on loss rates varied and was complex depending on the apiary size.

Astaxanthin due to its strong antioxidant activity is believed to reduce oxidative stress and therefore is considered as feed additive in pathological conditions and also for the athletes. It is promoted by several equine web portals, however, data supporting that concept in horses is limited. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of astaxanthin supplementation on the parameters of oxidative status in 3 years old, racing Arabian horses during long term observation and the changes related to a single training session of high intensity.

Caprine arthritis-encephalitis (CAE) is a progressive disease of goats caused by small ruminant lentivirus (SRLV) and is considered as one of the most important threats for goat farming in developed countries. The disease prevalence has never been investigated in the Lithuanian goat population. Therefore, a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in 2021-2022 to determine if SRLV infection was present in the Lithuanian goat population and, in the case of a positive result, to estimate the true herd-level prevalence of SRLV infection and specify genotypes and subtypes of SRLV responsible for the infection.

The widespread and uncontrolled use of anthelmintic products has contributed to the emergence of anthelmintic resistance (AR). This phenomenon globally threatens the productivity and welfare of small ruminants. A questionnaire consisting of 34 questions was handed to 234 goat farmers across Romania to gain insight into control practices against internal parasites and the farmers' perception of the parasitic infections present in their herds and the efficacy of anthelmintic treatments.

This study aimed to evaluate the oral supplementation of astaxanthin (ATX) on inflammatory markers in 3-year-old Arabian racehorses. Despite the recognized antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of ATX observed in vitro in rodent models and in human athletes, the effects in equine subjects remain unknown. This study involved a controlled trial with 14 horses receiving either ATX (six horses) or a placebo (eight horses), monitored over four months of race training.

Background: Pigeon Rotavirus A (RVA) infection has been confirmed in pigeons in the last decade as a cause of Young Pigeon Disease (YPD). Although YPD has been known for many years to date, no studies have been conducted to track the spread of RVA infection in pigeons during the racing season. The presented research aims to determine the course of RVA infection during the flights of young racing pigeons in the summer season, in one of the districts in the Mazovian Voivodeship in Poland.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate spinal degenerative changes in cats, particularly focusing on the incidence of these changes in cats with intervertebral disk herniation versus other spinal diseases.
  • Out of 114 cats analyzed, 70% exhibited some form of spinal degeneration, with intervertebral disk degeneration being the most prevalent finding, and these changes were linked to age and weight.
  • The findings suggest that in cats showing myelopathy, intervertebral disk extrusion is often the main cause of symptoms, while other conditions like lumbosacral stenosis may not be directly related to the neurological issues presented.
