The relationship between the fatty acid (FA) profile of cecotrophs and that of the milk fat was evaluated in nine multiparous New Zealand does during the first 12 days of lactation. Milk samples were obtained manually on days 6, 8, 10, and 12 postpartum and cecotrophs and feces were collected on days 7, 9, and 11 postpartum. The FA profiles of feed, milk, cecotrophs, and feces were determined using gas chromatography.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued its final determination that partially hydrogenated oils (PHO) are no longer generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for any use in human food. Consequently, the discrimination between PHO and fully hydrogenated oils (FHO), which is achieved by the iodine value (IV), has become an important regulatory issue. This study compared American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) titration and gas chromatography with flame-ionization detection (GC-FID) methodologies for the determination of IV in seven samples of hydrogenated oil, namely coconut, cottonseed (n = 2), palm kernel, palm stearine, and soybean (n = 2) oils.

Using a portable field device, a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and partial least-squares regression (PLSR) method was developed for the rapid (<5 min) prediction of major and minor fatty acid (FA) concentrations in marine oil omega-3 dietary supplements. Calibration models were developed with 174 gravimetrically prepared samples. These models were tested using an independent validation set of dietary supplements.

Molecular regulation of fatty acid desaturase (Fads) gene expression by dietary arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) during early post-natal period, when the demand for long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) is very high, has not been well defined. The objective of the current study was to determine regulation of liver Fads1, Fads2 and Fads3 classical (CS) and alternative transcripts (AT) expression by dietary ARA and DHA, within the physiological range present in human breast milk, in suckling piglets. Piglets were fed one of six milk replacer formula diets (formula-reared groups, FR) with varying ARA and DHA content from days 3-28 of age.
