Objective: To compare the clinical and histological outcomes of the repair of induced abdominal wall defects with Parietex and Optilene Mesh Elastic + Safil in direct contact with abdominal viscera (intraperitoneal position, IPOM).
Methods: Sixteen rabbits were allocated into two groups with 8 animals each, corresponding to evaluation on the 30th and 60th postoperative days. All animals were submitted to two standardized symmetric abdominal wall defects, comprising all muscular layers and the peritoneum, followed by repair through the intraperitoneal placement of two different meshes.
Purpose: To compare the capsular reaction to two different coverings of silicone prosthesis through the biophysical characteristic of adherence and microscopical aspects of the inflammatory reaction and collagen formation.
Methods: Thirty two Wistar rats were used. In the dorsum of each animal a silicone elastomer with a smooth superficies and another coated with texturized silicone (Mentor) was implanted.
Background: Since the introduction of endoscopic forehead surgery, several fixation techniques have been described to remediate the fall of the lateral portion of the brow. Unfortunately, few studies demonstrate good long-term results with these methods.
Methods: This study evaluates long-term results of a lateral brow fixation technique that uses two points in the lateral eyebrow: one in the distal extremity and another corresponding to the midpoint between the pupil and the lateral canthus of the eye.
Objectives: We examined whether US Postal Service letter carriers who received a sun safety intervention would wear wide-brim hats and sunscreen significantly more often than those who did not receive the intervention.
Methods: We used a 2-group randomized design with 2662 evaluation cohort participants from 70 US postal stations. Evaluations were conducted at baseline, 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years.
Malignant mesothelioma with deciduoid features (MMWDF) is a recently characterized morphologic variant of epithelioid malignant mesothelioma, which frequently is misdiagnosed as peritoneal deciduosis or florid mesothelial hyperplasia. We report on the cytological, histological, immunohistochemical, and autopsy findings of a case of MMWDF arising in the pericardium of a 71-yr-old female patient. Cytology showed large, polygonal to round cells with pale to bright, eosinophilic cytoplasm, occasionally showing xantomatous pattern, containing a pleomorphic and vesicular nucleus with a single prominent nucleolus.
