Article Synopsis
  • Researchers used machine learning to identify and predict which bat species carry zoonotic viruses, aiming to prevent human outbreaks.
  • They found that bat species with longer lifespans, large group sizes, and wide geographic ranges in the eastern hemisphere tend to carry more viruses.
  • Their models identified 54 bat species as potential undetected virus carriers, highlighting global regions where targeted research could help reduce disease spillover into humans.

Diseases emerging from wildlife have been the source of many major human outbreaks. Predicting key sources of these outbreaks requires an understanding of the factors that explain pathogen diversity in reservoir species. Comparative methods are powerful tools for understanding variation in pathogen diversity and rely on correcting for phylogenetic relatedness among reservoir species.
