Utilizing Deep Learning for Diagnosing Radicular Cysts.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop a deep learning algorithm capable of diagnosing radicular cysts in the lower jaw on panoramic radiographs.

Materials And Methods: In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of 138 radicular cysts and 100 normal panoramic radiographs collected from 2013 to 2023 at Clinical Hospital Dubrava. The images were annotated by a team comprising a radiologist and a maxillofacial surgeon, utilizing the GNU Image Manipulation Program.

Significant advances in reconstructive head and neck surgery with free microvascular flaps have had a positive impact on esthetic outcomes and quality of life. However, complications still occur in some patients. This study investigated the influence of the Hemoglobin, Albumin, Lymphocyte, and Platelet Score (HALP score), an immunonutritive marker, on complications and flap success.

Unrecognized Lower Jaw Fracture in a Physically and Emotionally Abused Child.

Diagnosing child abuse still poses a challenge for healthcare professionals. We will present a case in which a physically and emotionally abused four-year-old boy had an undiagnosed lower jaw fracture for almost eight months. The child first presented with a peri-mandibular swelling and was treated with antibiotics prescribed by his doctor of dental medicine.

Salivary melatonin in oral squamous cell carcinoma patients.

Melatonin's role in circadian rhythm is well documented, as are its' anti-oxidant, oncostatic and anti-inflammatory properties. Poor sleep quality has been associated as a potential risk factor for several malignancies, including head and neck cancers. The purpose of this study is to determine salivary melatonin (MLT) levels in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients, compare the salivary MLT levels with those in healthy individuals and compare the salivary and serum levels in OSCC patients.

Prognostic factors in head and neck mucoepidermoid carcinoma: experience at a single institution based on 64 consecutive patients over a 28-year period.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignancy of the salivary glands. The clinical behaviour of MEC is largely unpredictable, ranging from indolent tumour growth to highly aggressive metastatic spread. The objective of this study was to determine the clinicopathological predictors of recurrence and survival in patients with head and neck MEC.

Extended Karapandzic Flap Technique for Reconstruction of Lower Lip and Chin Defect.

Purpose: Near total defect of the lower lip adjacent to the chin remains a reconstructive challenge for surgeons in function and esthetics. The objective of this study was to present a modified extended Karapandzic technique for reconstruction of near total defects of the lower lip adjacent with the chin.

Materials And Methods: From 2000 to 2013, patients with lip cancer or oral cavity cancer who required subtotal lower lip and chin resection and subsequently underwent reconstruction with an extended Karapandzic flap were included in this retrospective study.

Comparative study between lag screw and miniplate fixation for straight midline mandibular osteotomy.

The mandibular swing approach is a surgical approach for the resection of malignant lesions localized in the posterior oral cavity and oropharynx. We analyzed 15 years of experience with fixation of the straight midline mandibulotomy and compared two fixation methods: lag screws and miniplates. A total of 117 patients underwent a straight midline mandibulotomy during the study period; 85 had fixation with two lag screws and 32 with two miniplates.
