Background: Michigan residents were directly exposed to endocrine-disrupting compounds, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). A growing body of evidence suggests that exposure to certain endocrine-disrupting compounds may affect thyroid function, especially in people exposed as children, but there are conflicting observations. In this study, we extend previous work by examining age of exposure's effect on the relationship between PBB exposure and thyroid function in a large group of individuals exposed to PBB.

We assessed the effect of the ASHA program on the utilization of maternity services.
Methods: We used data from Indian Human Development Surveys done in 2004-2005 and in 2011-2012 to assess demographic and socioeconomic factors associated with the receipt of ASHA services, and used difference-in-difference analysis with cluster-level fixed effects to assess the effect of the program on the utilization of at least one antenatal care (ANC) visit, four or more ANC visits, skilled birth attendance (SBA), and giving birth at a health facility.
Objectives: Despite the recognised importance of adopting a continuum of care perspective in addressing the care of mothers and newborns, evidence on specific interventions to enhance engagement of women along the maternity care continuum has been limited. We use the example of the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) programme in India, to understand the role of community health workers in retaining women in the maternity care continuum.
Methods: Using the Indian Human Development Survey data from 2011 to 2012, we assess the association between individual and cluster-level exposure to ASHA and four key components along the continuum of care-at least one antenatal care (ANC) visit, four or more ANC visits, presence of a skilled birth attendance (SBA) at the time of birth and postnatal care for the mother or child within 48 hours of birth, for 13 705 women with a live birth since 2005.
Advanced age increases risk for cancer, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality. However, people do not age at the same rate, and biological age (frequently measured through DNA methylation) can be older than chronological age. Environmental factors have been associated with the rate of biological aging, but it is not known whether persistent endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) like polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) would associate with age acceleration.

Given their phagocytic and inflammatory functions, we hypothesized that differences in circulating monocytes may play a role in alloimmunization.
Study Design And Methods: Forty-two adults with sickle cell disease (SCD) were recruited, with data extracted from the electronic medical record and peripheral blood analyzed by flow cytometry for total monocytes, monocyte subsets (CD14 high/CD16 low+ classical monocytes, CD14 high/CD16 high+ intermediate monocytes, and CD14 intermediate/CD16 high+ non-classical/inflammatory monocytes), and FcγR1 (CD64) expression.

Aim: To investigate the roles and relationships of registered Clinical Dental Technicians (CDTs) in the dental team and healthcare systems, and their perspective as a professional group in the United Kingdom (UK).
Methods: This qualitative study was conducted following a national questionnaire survey of CDTs, 18 of whom participated in semi-structured interviews; they were purposively sampled to represent the diversity and demography of CDTs. A topic guide, informed by the literature and survey findings, guided discussions which were recorded and transcribed verbatim.
Background/aims: We surveyed sickle cell disease (SCD) patients who transitioned from pediatric care at Texas Children's Hematology Center (TCHC) to adult care to determine the characteristics of patients with an adult SCD provider, continuation rates of pre-transition therapies, and patient perceptions of the transition process.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted by telephone survey of 44 young adults with SCD, aged 19-29 years, who transitioned from TCHC to adult care within the last 15 years.
Results: Findings of the 23-item questionnaire revealed that transitioned patients with current adult providers (68.
This paper explores the contextualised relationship between disability and oral health, locating questions about the oral health and oral health care of disabled people within wider debates about the material, social and cultural barriers that disabled people face when accessing health care. Sociological and disability studies research is drawn on to highlight potential barriers to oral health for disabled people and outline alternative ways of looking at, thinking about and challenging these barriers. Starting with a brief look at definitions and understandings of disability and the impact of this on attitudes, research on the multi-level barriers faced by disabled people within oral health care is then highlighted.

However, non-ventilator associated healthcare associated pneumonia (NV-HAP) is both underreported and understudied. Most research conducted to date, focuses on ventilator associated pneumonia.

This study aimed to estimate the distribution of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23), an endocrine hormone that helps to regulate serum phosphate levels, in the overall US population and in important subgroups. We used a predictive model generated using data from the Framingham Health Study to estimate FGF-23 values for adults in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the size of patient subgroups with levels of FGF-23 above selected thresholds.

Materials And Methods: HPPA, HPLA and tyrosine were added separately to pooled serum from subjects without AKU in a range of assays with Roche Modular chemistries. Effects on urine were assessed by changes in urine strip chemistries after mixing a positive control urine with various amounts of the test compounds and reading on a Siemens urine strip meter.

Background And Purpose: Objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) are an assessment solution that can be adapted in multiple ways within the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum to assess clinical and communication skills and to improve teaching and learning across the curriculum.
Educational Activity And Setting: The University of Florida College of Pharmacy formed an OSCE Assessment Committee, wrote blueprints for the OSCEs aligned with Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), and delivered OSCEs in the first and third professional years of the PharmD program.
Findings: Overall, students performed well on both the first year OSCE and third year OSCE (96 to 97% pass rate on first attempt).
Objectives: For 300 paediatric trials, we evaluated the reporting of: a data monitoring committee (DMC); interim analyses, stopping rules and early stopping; and adverse events and harm-related endpoints.
Methods: For this cross-sectional evaluation, we randomly selected 300 paediatric trials published in 2012 from the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. We collected data on the reporting of a DMC; interim analyses, stopping rules and early stopping; and adverse events and harm-related endpoints.
Endocrine-disrupting compounds are associated with altered epigenetic regulation and adverse health outcomes, although inconsistent results suggest that people have varied responses to the same exposure. Interpersonal variation in response to environmental exposures is not identified using standard, population-based methods. However, methods that capture an individual's response, such as analyzing stochastic epigenetic mutations (SEMs), may capture currently missed effects of environmental exposure.

Methods: Retrospective observational study of women with MFS delivering between January 1998 and March 2018 in 12 UK centres reporting data on maternal and neonatal outcomes.
The performed a collaborative retrospective analysis to evaluate packed bed chromatographic resin performance after repeated cycling for two commonly used chromatography steps in biopharmaceutical manufacturing: protein A and anion exchange. Key variables evaluated in the assessment included virus type, resin type, number of reuse cycles, and virus challenge. In this retrospective analysis of viral clearance data on naïve versus cycled resin, powered by the availability of a decade's worth of accumulated industry data, clearance capability was not negatively impacted by resin cycling.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFMental health supported accommodation services are implemented across England, usually organised into a 'step-down' care pathway that requires the individual to repeatedly move as they gain skills and confidence for more independent living. There have been no trials comparing the effectiveness of different types of supported accommodation, but two widely used models (supported housing and floating outreach) have been found to provide similar support. We aimed to assess the feasibility of conducting a large-scale trial comparing these two models.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Around 60 000 people in England live in mental health supported accommodation. There are three main types: residential care, supported housing and floating outreach. Supported housing and floating outreach aim to support service users in moving on to more independent accommodation within 2 years, but there has been little research investigating their effectiveness.

Meteorologically, precipitation is generated by unique mechanisms at the land-sea interface, which is why coastal zone precipitation is not well resolved by global climate models. Yet, to date, much more effort has been placed in analyzing global precipitation over the oceans and land.

The aim of this study was to document responses to noticing the changes preceding a diagnosis of brain cancer and living with them, focusing on appraisal of changes and the decision to seek (and re-seek) help, with attention to the psychological processes underpinning the appraisal and help-seeking intervals.
Method: In this qualitative study set in Eastern and NW England, in-depth interviews with adult patients recently diagnosed with primary brain cancer and their family members were analysed thematically, using the Model of Pathways to Treatment as a conceptual framework.
Objective: Pregnancies in women with Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) are rare and are typically documented in case reports only. Early reports suggested high rates of maternal complications during pregnancy and the puerperium, including aortic dissection and uterine rupture, but information on fetal outcomes was very limited.
Design: A retrospective cohort study.
In 1973, Michigan residents were exposed to polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) when it was accidentally added to farm animal feed. Highly exposed individuals and their children have experienced endocrine-related health problems, though the underlying mechanism behind these remains unknown. We investigated whether PBB exposure is associated with variation in DNA methylation in peripheral blood samples from 658 participants of the Michigan PBB registry using the MethylationEPIC BeadChip, as well as investigated what the potential function of the affected regions are and whether these epigenetic marks are known to associate with endocrine system pathways.
