Background: Chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) represent 4% of all PCIs for stable angina in the United States and have been associated with lower success and higher in-hospital event rates compared with non-CTO PCIs. We aimed to examine long-term outcomes of CTO PCI compared with non-CTO PCI, including prespecified subgroups of high-risk non-CTO PCI (atherectomy/saphenous vein graft/unprotected left main).

Methods: Among 551,722 patients in the National Cardiovascular Data Registry CathPCI Registry linked to Medicare (July 2009-December 2016), we evaluated in-hospital events and long-term major adverse cardiovascular events of CTO PCIs (N = 29,407) compared with non-CTO PCIs (N = 522,315).

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has demonstrated the need to share data and biospecimens broadly to optimize clinical outcomes for US military Veterans.

Methods: In response, the Veterans Health Administration established VA SHIELD (Science and Health Initiative to Combat Infectious and Emerging Life-threatening Diseases), a comprehensive biorepository of specimens and clinical data from affected Veterans to advance research and public health surveillance and to improve diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities.

Results: VA SHIELD now comprises 12 sites collecting de-identified biospecimens from US Veterans affected by SARS-CoV-2.

We study the electrodynamics of spin triplet superconductors including dipolar interactions, which give rise to an interplay between the collective spin dynamics of the condensate and orbital Meissner screening currents. Within this theory, we identify a class of spin waves that originate from the coupled dynamics of the spin-symmetry breaking triplet order parameter and the electromagnetic field. In particular, we study magnetostatic spin wave modes that are localized to the sample surface.

Atomic-level defects in van der Waals (vdW) materials are essential building blocks for quantum technologies and quantum sensing applications. The layered magnetic semiconductor CrSBr is an outstanding candidate for exploring optically active defects because of a direct gap, in addition to a rich magnetic phase diagram, including a recently hypothesized defect-induced magnetic order at low temperature. Here, we show optically active defects in CrSBr that are probes of the local magnetic environment.

Neuroinflammation is involved in a wide range of brain disorders, thus there is great interest in identifying novel anti-inflammatory agents to include in therapeutic strategies. Our previous in vitro studies revealed that beta-funaltrexamine (β-FNA), a well-characterized selective mu-opioid receptor (MOR) antagonist, inhibits inflammatory signaling in human astroglial cells, albeit through an apparent MOR-independent mechanism. The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine whether reduced lingual strength was associated with functional swallowing outcomes in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Participants (N = 42) completed evaluations of maximal lingual isometric pressure (MIP) and mean lingual swallowing pressure (MSP), and flexible endoscopic evaluations of swallowing. Regression models were used to determine the association between lingual strength and functional swallowing outcomes of airway invasion, the presence of post-swallow pharyngeal residue, and the amount of pharyngeal residue (when present).

A 2021 study described the development and validation of a blood-based precision medicine test called the molecular signature response classifier (MSRC) that uses 23 features to identify rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients who are likely nonresponders to tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitor (TNFi) therapy. Both the gene expression features and clinical components (sex, body mass index, patient global assessment, and anti-cyclic citrullinated protein) included in the MSRC were statistically significant contributors to MSRC results. In response to continued inquiries on this topic, we write this letter to provide additional insights into the contribution of clinical components to the MSRC on the Network-004 validation cohort.

The microbiome has been implicated in the development of metabolic conditions which occur at high rates in people with schizophrenia and related psychoses. This exploratory proof-of-concept study aimed to: (i) characterize the gut microbiota in antipsychotic naïve or quasi-naïve people with first-episode psychosis, and people with established schizophrenia receiving clozapine therapy; (ii) test for microbiome changes following a lifestyle intervention which included diet and exercise education and physical activity.
