Introduction: Cystoid macular edema (CME) presents with thickening of the macula with an accumulation of fluid due to breakage of the inner and outer blood-retinal barriers. It is referred to as pseudophakic CME (PCME) if it occurs after cataract surgery. PGF2a is a prostaglandin analog (PGA) used to lower intraocular pressure (IOP).

Background/purpose: Identify the prevalence and risk factors for secondary glaucoma among Mexican-mestizo patients with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Disease (VKH).

Methods: Retrospective cohort study analyzing the demographic, clinical, and epidemiological variables. Risk estimates were calculated using a Cox proportional hazards regression model.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how common secondary glaucoma is in patients with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease, along with its clinical features and underlying mechanisms.
  • An analysis of 305 eyes from 155 patients revealed that 22% developed secondary glaucoma, particularly in those with chronic recurrent VKH, with angle-closure being a major factor.
  • The findings indicated that patients with glaucoma had worse visual acuity compared to those without, highlighting the serious impact of glaucoma in VKH-related eye conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) is a key cause of blindness, prompting a large-scale study involving over 10,000 PACG patients and nearly 30,000 controls across multiple continents.
  • The study identified five new genetic loci associated with PACG risk, each with significant statistical results (e.g., EPDR1 with an odds ratio of 1.24 and a P-value of 5.94 × 10(-15)).
  • Additionally, three previously known genetic loci were confirmed, enhancing the understanding of the genetic factors underlying PACG.

Background: There are different etiologies related to glaucoma, with the involvement of different systems in the origin and development of the disease.

Methods: We performed a literature review.

Results: The data is divided, with an emphasis on five main topics: systemic disease, neurodegenerative disease, genetic disease, immunological disease, and aging of the trabecular meshwork.

Aim: To evaluate the long-term response to the fixed combination of dorzolamide/timolol in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and the addition of other intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering medications such as prostaglandin analogs and brimonidine.

Methods: A retrospective, non-randomized, and descriptive clinical study was performed with 182 eyes diagnosed with POAG. Patients were divided into three groups: a group with fixed combination of dorzolamide/timolol only, a second group with prostaglandin analogs plus fixed combination of dorzolamide/timolol, and a third group with the addition of brimonidine to the same fixed combination.
