In the United States in 2021, an outbreak of 4 cases of Burkholderia pseudomallei, the etiologic agent of melioidosis and a Tier One Select Agent (potential for deliberate misuse and subsequent harm), resulted in 2 deaths. The causative strain, B. pseudomallei ATS2021, was unintentionally imported into the United States in an aromatherapy spray manufactured in India.

Our objective was to evaluate if there is a similar association in children. Single center retrospective matched cohort study, we collected data on patients aged 1-18 who were admitted to the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) between Jan 2012 and Dec 2021.

Left ventricular trabeculation in Hominidae: divergence of the human cardiac phenotype.

Although the gross morphology of the heart is conserved across mammals, subtle interspecific variations exist in the cardiac phenotype, which may reflect evolutionary divergence among closely-related species. Here, we compare the left ventricle (LV) across all extant members of the Hominidae taxon, using 2D echocardiography, to gain insight into the evolution of the human heart. We present compelling evidence that the human LV has diverged away from a more trabeculated phenotype present in all other great apes, towards a ventricular wall with proportionally greater compact myocardium, which was corroborated by post-mortem chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) hearts.

Catchiness and groove are common phenomena when listening to popular music. Catchiness may be a potential factor for experiencing groove but quantitative evidence for such a relationship is missing. To examine whether and how catchiness influences a key component of groove-the pleasurable urge to move to music (PLUMM)-we conducted a listening experiment with 450 participants and 240 short popular music clips of drum patterns, bass lines or keys/guitar parts.

Impact of veteran-led peer mentorship on posttraumatic stress disorder.

Peer mentorship shows promise as a strategy to support veteran mental health. A community-academic partnership involving a veteran-led nonprofit organization and institutions of higher education evaluated a collaboratively developed peer mentor intervention. Methods: A single-institution retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database of patients with connective tissue disorders and CVD was performed.

Objective: Given the limited literature describing propofol use in pediatric patients, this study aimed to describe the dosing and duration of propofol infusions for non-procedural sedation in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). The secondary objectives were to describe the change in concomitant sedative requirements from the 24-hour period before propofol initiation to the 24-hour period after discontinuation of propofol and to review the frequency of adverse events.

Methods: This retrospective descriptive cohort study evaluated children 1 month to less than 18 years old who received a continuous infusion of propofol for non-procedural sedation in the PICU between May 2018 and August 2020.

Development of a novel low-background noise blood loop model for testing blood-contacting biomaterials and medical devices in fresh human blood.

A novel low volume blood loop model (Ension Triad System [ETS]) incorporating pulsatile flow and a proprietary low-activation blood-contacting surface (Ension bioactive surface [EBS]) enabling high signal-to-noise performance is described. The ETS system incorporates a test chamber that allows direct comparison of material samples or finished medical devices such as catheters with varying compositions and/or surface treatments. ETS performance is presented from two independent organizations (Medtronic and MLM Labs) and includes results for hemolysis (pfHgb), platelet count, platelet activation (βTG), coagulation (TAT), inflammation (PMN Elastase, PMN CD112b, and monocyte CD112b) and immune response (SC5b-9) were made on: (1) the EBS-treated system itself without a test material (No Material, NM); (2) the EBS-treated system with an idealized untreated catheter (UC); and (3) the EBS-treated system with the prototype catheter treated with the EBS surface treatment (CC).
