"Not in my backyard" (NIMBY) movements emerge when a social or political event spurs opposition from local residents. Binding of the allosteric effector ligand N'-[5'-phosphoribulosyl)formimino]-5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-ribonucleotide (PRFAR) stimulates millisecond (ms) timescale motions in IGPS that enhance its catalytic function. We studied the effect of temperature on these critical conformational motions and the catalytic mechanism of IGPS from the hyperthermophile in an effort to understand temperature-dependent allostery.

In Malawi, one such context, we examine how an LGBTIQ social movement organization (SMO) in Malawi, the Centre for the Development of People (CEDEP), navigated one particular strategic dilemma-the dilemma of whether to adopt a less politicized public-health approach or a more nimble, grassroots-oriented, and social-justice approach to their advocacy work-and the consequences of the organization's strategic decisions. Scholars interpret these approaches as signifying differential political engagement among organizations, with the social-justice approach indicating political engagement and the public-health approach signaling political disengagement.

This study correlated mammographically detected BACs with coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factors and a history of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), estimating the relative risk of ASCVD in patients with BACs.
Design: Women arriving for breast cancer screening mammography gave their consent to complete a questionnaire and to allow their mammograms to be analyzed independently for the presence of BACs by certified radiologists, who were blinded to the results of the questionnaire.
Objective: To bring further understanding to the relationship between hormonal therapy (HT) and breast arterial calcification (BAC).
Methods: Of women arriving for breast cancer screening mammography, 1995 consented to complete a survey and have their mammograms analyzed for the presence of BAC. The survey assessed HT use and major risk factors for CAD.
Purpose: To investigate prospectively the feasibility of using optical tomography with ultrasonographic (US) localization to differentiate malignant from benign breast masses and to compare optical tomography with color Doppler US.
Materials And Methods: The study was approved by the local internal review board committee and by the Human Subjects Research Review Board of Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. Signed informed consent was obtained, and the study was HIPAA compliant.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Renal medullary carcinoma is a recently described, highly aggressive neoplasm that affects predominantly young African American males with a history of sickle cell trait. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of fine needle aspirate cytology (FNAC) findings of renal medullary carcinoma.
Case: A 14-year-old, African American male with a history of sickle cell trait presented with the sudden onset of third cranial nerve palsy.
Tissue repair requires an adequate cellular proliferation coordinated with the timely proteolysis of matrix elements. Based on the properties of plasminogen activators in liver cell proliferation and tissue proteolysis, we explored the regulatory role of tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) in liver repair. Using carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) intoxication as a model of acute liver injury, we found that tPA-deficient mice displayed a mild defect in hepatic repair, whereas livers of uPA-deficient mice had a more substantial delay in repair, with injury of centrilobular hepatocytes persisting up to 14 days after CCl(4).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn macrophages, interleukin-1 (IL-1) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) enhance the antichlamydial effect of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) by increasing indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) activity in a dose-dependent manner. Our objectives were to characterize the antichlamydial effect of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) on IFN-induced IDO activity and to establish the relationship between LPS and TNF-alpha in IDO potentiation. TNF-alpha inhibited chlamydial growth in a dose-dependent manner only in IFN-treated macrophages.
