The aim of this study was to examine the effects of forest fragmentation on the ability of parent birds to provide their young with an adequate food supply. To examine whether prey population densities of the great tit (Parus major L.) and the blue tit (P.

Behavioural observations were consistent with the hypothesis that males attempted to ensure paternity by mate guarding, while pursuing extra-pair copulations (EPCs) primarily outside the fertile period of their pair female. The intensity of guarding varied with time of season and was greater at late nests.

In particular, pain, spinal cord compression and symptoms due to either raised intracranial pressure or specific neurological deficits may substantially impair the quality of life in patients with advanced cancer. Pain control, using both medical and surgical treatments, are discussed.

These mortalities occurred during a year of food shortage corresponding with a decline in the population of snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus), the main prey for great horned owls.

Accommodative responses to targets incorporating one or more of these cues were measured for four adults and eight infants at 1.5 and 3 months of age using eccentric photorefraction.

It is difficult for many persons with physical disabilities to find and access primary health care. This article discusses this problem from the perspective of a physiatrist. It discusses the components of primary health care and then compares and contrasts the current status of the training, skills, and interest levels of generalist physicians and physiatrists in providing primary medical care for disabled persons.

The objective of this study was to determine whether there is a greater incidence of psychotropic drugs in the blood of those 'responsible' for an accident compared with those not 'responsible' for an accident. Blood samples were taken from people involved in accidents presenting at the accident and emergency departments of two teaching hospitals over a five-month period and analysed for the presence of alcohol, tricyclic anti-depressants (TCAs) and benzodiazepines (BZs). Details of the accident were used to produce a test group (accidents where a drug may have contributed) and a control group (accidents where the presence of a drug could not have been a factor).

Throughout adult abdominal development there is a close association between nerves and myoblasts. However, the role of innervation in adult myogenesis is unclear.

Acetylcholine is the excitatory transmitter at vertebrate neuromuscular synapses, and previous studies have shown that accumulation of acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) at synaptic sites is controlled both by transcriptional and post-translational mechanisms. The transcriptional pathway culminates in selective expression of AChR subunit genes in nuclei near the synaptic site, causing AChR mRNA to accumulate in the synaptic region of the muscle fiber.

We measured CYP1A1 genotypes, gene expression levels and enzymatic activity levels in mitogen-stimulated lymphocytes to determine whether genetic polymorphisms in CYP1A1 alter transcriptional and/or post-transcriptional regulation of the gene. Genotypes were determined at two sites previously associated with lung cancer: a point mutation in exon 7 near the catalytic region of the enzyme and an Msp1 RFLP in the 3' non-coding region of the gene.

Seventeen alleles of the merozoite surface protein MSP-1 and 23 of MSP-2 were detected by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) among the blood parasites of the inhabitants. Most infections contained mixtures of genetically distinct parasite clones.

The latter, described in patients attending infertility clinics, results from immotile but viable spermatozoa. Experience in a respiratory clinic suggests that infertility in men is not invariable.

Bowel incontinence is a major social impairment for 90% of patients with spina bifida. This study assess the bowel continence of children and young adults with spina bifida before and after a toileting intervention that emphasized patient/family education and a regular, consistently timed, reflex-triggered bowel evacuation. Bowel continence defined as one or fewer incontinent stools per month, rose from 13% (5/40) to 60% (24/40) following intervention.

The central effects of atenolol (50 mg tds) and captopril (50 mg tds) ingested for a period of seven days were studied in ten healthy volunteers. A placebo and two active control drugs, methyldopa (250 mg tds) and oxazepam (10 mg), were included in the design. Oxazepam was ingested on the seventh day only, with a placebo being taken on the preceding six days.

Method: Red cell lead levels were measured at the end of a six month (winter) indoor shooting season and prior to commencement of shooting in the following year. Lead levels in air and dust sampled at one range were also measured.
A new Msp1 RFLP in the CYP1A1 gene has been found in genomic DNA from African-Americans. The polymorphism results from a single A-T to G-C transition in the 3' noncoding region approximately 300 bp upstream from the polyadenylation site. This mutation leads to cleavage of the normal 2.

This study evaluated the possibility that extraretinal signals of eye position are available to cancel the retinal image motion produced by nystagmus eye movements.
Methods: To assess the extraretinal signal for nystagmus, subjects pointed in the perceived direction of a target that was flashed for 2 msec in total darkness at various phases of the nystagmus waveform.
