Background: Genetic literacy among primary healthcare providers is crucial for appropriate patient care with the advances in genetic and genomic medicine. Studies from high-income countries highlight the lack of knowledge in genetics and the need to develop curricula for continuing professional development of non-geneticists. Scarce data is available from resource-constrained countries in Middle East and North Africa.

Novel Biomarkers for Early Detection of Acute Kidney Injury and Prediction of Long-Term Kidney Function Decline after Partial Nephrectomy.

Primary manifestations of extraganglion non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) from T-cells in the oral cavity are rare and often difficult to diagnose. Herein, we describe a case of T-cell NHL with a primary lesion on the lip diagnosed with a 25-year-old woman. The patient reported the appearance of the initial lesion on the upper lip, which advanced to the hard palate and oral mucosa.

Factors associated with the utilization of dental health services by the pediatric population: an integrative review.

This integrative literature review aimed to analyze studies about factors associated with the utilization of dental health services by the pediatric population between zero and 15 years old, published between 2006 and 2016 and available in Portuguese, English or Spanish. A survey of articles in the Lilacs and Medline databases was carried out, using the search strategy: ("dental care/utilization" OR "dental health services/utilization") AND ("child" OR "child, preschool") AND NOT adult. To analyze the methodological quality, the adapted Critical Appraisal Skill Programme (CASP) and the Agency for Healthcare and Research and Quality (AHRQ) were used.

Utilization of oral health services network among children and adolescents with leukemia.

Aim: To evaluate the use of the network of oral health services by children and adolescents with leukemia, according to the phase of cancer treatment, type of dental treatment received, and access barriers.

Methods And Results: An exploratory cross-sectional study carried out in a referral hospital in cancer in northeast of Brazil, with all children and adolescents (3-16 years old) with leukemia who used dental services and who attended the medical consultation in the outpatient clinic between March and August 2016. The analysis of the medical records and a structured interview with caregivers were performed.

Efficacy of imidazolquinoline on treatment of condyloma acuminatum of the buccal mucosa.

The condylomata acuminata is a benign epithelial neoplasm induced by papillomavirus, and it is characterized by the proliferation of stratified squamous epithelial tissue that affects the anogenital and oral mucosa. It is considered to be a sexually transmitted disease and has a higher prevalence in individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus. Various therapies have been used for the removal of lesions, such as cryotherapy, surgical laser and surgical excision, which are painful and scarring.

Combating an Epidemic of Prescription Opioid Abuse.

The past decade has witnessed an alarming increase in the number of deaths due to prescription opioids that has paralleled the rise in the number of opioid prescriptions dispensed. Prescription drug monitoring programs, abuse-deterrent formulations and proper disposal of opioids have been promoted to help combat the opioid epidemic. We discuss changes that dentists, the third most frequent prescribers of opioids, can implement to help reduce the risk of prescription opioid abuse in their communities.

Pre-clinical evidence of PIM kinase inhibitor activity in BCR-ABL1 unmutated and mutated Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) leukemias.

We investigated the efficacy of targeting the PIM kinase pathway in Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) leukemias. We provide evidence that inhibition of PIM, with the pan-PIM inhibitor SGI-1776, results in suppression of classic PIM effectors and also elements of the mTOR pathway, suggesting interplay between PIM and mTOR signals. Our data demonstrate that PIM inhibition enhances the effects of imatinib mesylate on Ph+ leukemia cells.

Ovarian hyperthecosis in the context of an adrenal incidentaloma in a postmenopausal woman.

Adrenal incidentaloma is not infrequent and can be found in hirsute women. We report a case of a 54-year-old woman with amenorrhea and hirsutism of abrupt onset and mild signs of virilization that had an adrenal incidentaloma coexisting with ovarian hyperthecosis. Basal total and free testosterone were 191 ng/dL and 179 pmol/L.

Aminoacetone (AA) is a threonine and glycine catabolite long known to accumulate in cri-du-chat and threoninemia syndromes and, more recently, implicated as a contributing source of methylglyoxal (MG) in diabetes mellitus. Oxidation of AA to MG, NH(4)(+), and H(2)O(2) has been reported to be catalyzed by a copper-dependent semicarbazide sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) as well as by Cu(II) ions. We here study the mechanism of AA aerobic oxidation, in the presence and absence of iron ions, and coupled to iron release from ferritin.
