We present Class-agnostic Repetitive action Counting (CaRaCount), a novel approach to count repetitive human actions in the wild using wearable devices time series data. CaRaCount is the first few-shot class-agnostic method, being able to count repetitions of any action class with only a short exemplar data sequence containing a few examples from the action class of interest. To develop and evaluate this method, we collect a large-scale time series dataset of repetitive human actions in various context, containing smartwatch data from 10 subjects performing 50 different activities.

Esophageal cancer (EC) ranks as the 7th most prevalent form of cancer and the 6th leading cause of cancer-related mortality globally. Neoadjuvant therapy, encompassing neoadjuvant chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy, has shown promise in reducing the staging of EC and mitigating the risk of early systemic spread. This study seeks to assess the safety and viability of implementing neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in conjunction with radical esophagectomy surgery for Vietnamese patients diagnosed with locally advanced EC.

Brain water homeostasis not only provides a physical protection, but also determines the diffusion of chemical molecules key for information processing and metabolic stability. As a major type of glia in brain parenchyma, astrocytes are the dominant cell type expressing aquaporin water channel. How astrocyte aquaporin contributes to brain water homeostasis in basal physiology remains to be understood.

Article Synopsis
  • The study reveals that there is no significant morphological difference between the specimens analyzed by Orlov & Ho (2007) and Pham et al. (2019), indicating they belong to the same taxon.
  • New molecular data supports the classification of the latter as a junior synonym of the former.
  • Additionally, the research documents the first occurrence of this species in China, based on specimens from Yunnan Province, and updates the diagnosis of the species using both existing literature and new findings.

The translation of discoveries on extracellular vesicle (EV) based cancer biomarkers to personalised precision oncology requires the development of robust, sensitive and specific assays that are amenable to adoption in the clinical laboratory. Whilst a variety of elegant approaches for EV liquid biopsy have been developed, most of them remain as research prototypes due to the requirement of a high level of microfabrication and/or sophisticated instruments. Hence, this study is set to develop a simple DNA aptamer-enabled and fluorescence polarisation-based homogenous assay that eliminates the need to separate unbound detection ligands from the bound species for EV detection.

One new compound, methyl 3-((1-((2-carbamoylphenyl)amino)-1-oxopropan-2-yl)amino)-3-oxopropanoate (1), along with 9 known secondary metabolites (2-10) were isolated and elucidated chemical structures from the methanol extract of the marine-derived fungus Penicillium chrysogenum VH17. Subsequent bioassays showed the antimicrobial and cytotoxic potential of the isolated compounds. All compounds 1-10 displayed antimicrobial effects against at least one tested reference microorganism with MIC values ranging from 32 to 256 µg mL-1.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cell-derived nanosized membrane-bound vesicles that are important intercellular signalling regulators in local cell-to-cell and distant cell-to-tissue communication. Their inherent capacity to transverse cell membranes and transfer complex bioactive cargo reflective of their cell source, as well as their ability to be modified through various engineering and modification strategies, have attracted significant therapeutic interest. Molecular bioengineering strategies are providing a new frontier for EV-based therapy, including novel mRNA vaccines, antigen cross-presentation and immunotherapy, organ delivery and repair, and cancer immune surveillance and targeted therapeutics.

Surface proteins on the membrane of nano-sized extracellular vesicles (EVs) not only play crucial roles in cell-to-cell communication, but also are specific binding targets for EV detection, isolation and tracking. The low abundance of protein biomarkers on EV surface, the formation of clusters and the complex EV surface network impose significant challenges to the study of EVs. Employing bulky sized affinity ligands, such as antibodies, in the detection and characterization of these vesicles often result in reduced sensitivity of detection or poor quantification of proteins on the EV surface.

Unstable variant hemoglobinopathies are an uncommon cause of hemolysis in the pediatric patient and may cause a delay in diagnosis if there is not a high index of suspicion. Hemoglobin (Hb) Mizuho is a rare unstable hemoglobinopathy caused by a pathogenic variant of the gene with a severe phenotype. Here we report on the first known case of Hb Mizuho in Australia, presenting with features of acute and chronic hemolysis.
