An improved gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method to determine acrylamide (AA) in coffee and coffee products was developed. The method was based on two main purification steps: the first with ethanol and Carrez solutions in order to precipitate polysaccharides and proteins, respectively; and the second with a layered solid-phase extraction (SPE) column which proved to be efficient in the elimination of the main chromatographic interferences. The method is applicable to a wide range of coffee products.

Several epidemiologic studies have demonstrated during the last 50 years an increased incidence in testis cancer, male genital tract malformations (cryptorchidism and hypospadias) and a decrease in sperm quality in men. These three pathologies seem to be linked and to belong to the testicular dysgenesis syndrome (TDS). It was suggested that TDS is a consequence of intra-uterine exposure to environmental compounds that disrupt the metabolism of native hormones.

A simple and accurate method based on solid-phase extraction (SPE), transesterification and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was developed for the quantitative analysis of free and esterified sterols of olive oil. In order to achieve better separation of esterified and free sterols, silica and alumina SPE adsorbents were tested. Separations by silica provided more reproducible results.

Background: The prevalence of asthma and allergic diseases has increased in industrialised countries, and it is known that rates vary according whether the area is urban or rural and to socio-economic status. Surveys conducted in some urban settings in Latin America found high prevalence rates, only exceeded by the rates observed in industrialised English-speaking countries. It is likely that the marked changes in the environment, life style and living conditions in Latin America are responsible for these observations.

Ankyrins are intracellular proteins required for the biogenesis and maintenance of membrane domains in both excitable and non-excitable cells. Ankyrin family polypeptides have been implicated in the targeting and stabilization of membrane proteins including ion channels, transporters, exchangers and cell adhesion molecules in diverse tissues and cell types including the erythrocyte, kidney, lung and brain. Dysfunction in ankyrin-based pathways has previously been linked to abnormalities in vertebrate physiology including spherocytosis and anemia, ataxia and axonal degeneration.

Three different HPLC detection systems were compared for the determination of tocopherols and tocotrienols in olive oil: fluorescence and diode array connected in series, ultraviolet, and evaporative light scattering. The best results were obtained with the fluorescence detector, which was successfully applied in the quantification of tocopherols and tocotrienols in 18 samples of Portuguese olive oils. To support the validity of the method, the parameters evaluated were linearity, detection limits, repeatability, and recovery.

This study has as purpose to analyse the implementation of the Nursing Care Systematization in a private hospital in medical surgical units. Results evidenced that the Horta's Conceptual Model was present only in part of nursing hystory instrument, that the remaining phases of nursing process were not inter-related and that there was a lack of coherence of the prescribed actions in relation to the patient's health condition. From the results of the study it can be concluded that the model used for Nursing Care Systematization is eclectic, not obeying therefore, only to Horta's conceptual model; the totality of the data had not been collected in some phases of the nursing process; there is no correlation of the phases in the majority of analyzed patient records; diagnostic and planning phases do not comprise the phases of the nursing process as proposed by Horta.

The proto-oncoprotein Cbl is known to control several signaling processes. It is highly expressed in the testis, and because spermatogenesis is androgen dependent, we investigated the androgen dependency expression of Cbl through its testicular sub-localization and its expression levels in rats that were exposed to the antiandrogen flutamide or were hypophysectomized. We report the androgen dependency of Cbl as it localizes in pachytene spermatocytes during androgen-dependent stages, is down-regulated upon flutamide exposure, and is up-regulated with testosterone in hypophysectomized rats.

Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) efficacy against pulmonary disease is highly variable; until very recently there was no evidence of protection after 10 years. In the control arm of a trial of efficacy of revaccination of schoolchildren in Brazil we found substantial protection (39%; 95%CI 9-58) of neonatal BCG against all forms of tuberculosis (TB) 15-20 years after vaccination, much longer than previously believed. This confirms recent findings from an earlier trial, and must be considered in the design of trials of new TB vaccines and in policy decisions based on assumed lack of neonatal BCG protection with time.

Background: Many countries offer a second BCG vaccination to prevent tuberculosis, although there is little evidence of whether this confers additional protection. BCG vaccination is routine in Brazil but BCG revaccination procedures vary by state. We studied revaccination efficacy in two Brazilian cities with tuberculosis prevalence representative of Brazil.

The relaxation dynamics of carbon disulfide are investigated in mixtures with polystyrene (PS) using the time-resolved optical heterodyne-detected optical Kerr effect (OHD-OKE). The data are analyzed using both the model-dependent approach, which assumes four distinct temporal responses, and the model-independent Fourier transform approach, which generates a spectral response that can be compared with results obtained by depolarized Rayleigh scattering. A slow dynamics is observed for the OHD-OKE transient decaying exponentially with a time constant that varies from 1.

The measurement and characterization of ultrashort laser pulses remains an arduous task. The most commonly used pulse-measurement method is known as frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG), and another version with great experimental simplification and low-priced setup is known as grating-eliminated no-nonsense observation of ultrafast incident laser light E fields (GRENOUILLE). Nevertheless, there is interest in elaborating other, more accessible or simpler and cheaper, setups with equal or better assets.
